SIYC Presents Life Sling Training

Space is limited, so sign up early

Recovering an overboard crewmember has been historically one of the most lethal situations for boaters. The Lifesling was developed by The Sailing Foundation to facilitate getting the crew safely back on deck. The SIYC will be offering our popular Lifesling Training course this summer featuring Margaret Pommert, VP for Safety at Sea for The Sailing Foundation along with other experienced trainers. The class will consist of one classroom session and a weekend on the water:

Thursday, August 1—evening class on history, theory, hands-on gear demos and much more. The location will be at Flightcraft’s training room at PDX. Includes a pizza dinner.

Friday, August 2-Sunday, August 4—in-the-water training based at Sand Island, St. Helens. This comprises each boat rigging and recovering a live COB at the dock, then practicing a sailing recovery with a dummy victim. Includes potluck meals, social hours and prizes.

If you wish to take the training and are a boat owner, you and your crew should both sign up. Non-boat owners can also take the class as guests on someone’s boat. There will be a small fee of $25/person for SIYC members. After SIYC members have had a chance to sign up, we will open a limited number of seats to guests from other yacht clubs for a fee of $40. Sign up at the SIYC website here.

This class has received rave reviews in the past for both first timers and those wishing to keep their lifesaving skills up to date. Not to mention a fun party during the best weather of the year!

WOOO NOTICE ON RULEMAKING

RE DREDGING RATES

If you or your organization have any chance of needing to dredge in the future, please take urgent and important action to protect yourselves from huge rate increases.

Background:

House Bill 2238 passed last year: the director shall evaluate the impact of fully recovering, through fees, the costs to the Department of State Lands of administering the removal and fill program provided for under ORS 196.600 to 196.921. (b) The director shall establish project tiers for fees…

DSL states they only recoup 21% of costs which means they could consider a 500% rate increase on these fees.  READ MORE

Green Crabs in The Puget Sound

Just as we Struggle in Oregon waters to keep invasive species at bay, Washington State also struggles. But Volunteers are working in the Puget Sound area to help remove them. For the complete story, click here

Beacon Rock Docks Closed Until Further Notice!

If you haven't heard, the Beacon Rock Park docks were badly damaged by the winter Ice this year. At this point the docks are closed. They have the materials ready to go but are awaiting permits to begin the reconstruction process including new power pedestals. Their current plan is to get the pumpout station up and running as soon as possible so that boaters can still anchor out and have a way to empty their tanks.

Cruising our waters and Using our Public Docks Courtesy

Every year we create a Cruise Schedule so that other Clubs can quickly see where cruises might be taking place at any given time. It really helps everyone to plan and know where open docks might be when considering a weekend outing. It is not a reservation so we should always work to accommodate other boaters when it makes sense. If the dock is full, it's full. If there's room, please invite them to join with you to experience what a boating club has to offer, and it might help to find new members. Schedules do change and we have been working hard to keep the CRYA Calendar at CRYA.us up to date on those changes so do look there when thinking of changes. And of course, let us know if changes are made to your schedules (Beacon Rock Closure) so we can keep everyone as informed as possible.

Content in your Club's Newsletters that all Boaters should read?

We can't see every club's internal communication, but we have to think some of the articles would be great information for all boaters. If you find that article of interest, please forward it to cryanews@gmail.com after getting approval to share. We can all be more informed.
