Daughters of Neptune Candidates for 2024

We are pleased to announce that our Daughters of Neptune program has been taking shape in 2023 so that we can now feel comfortable with continuing with the program for 2024. We are looking for girls who will be between the ages of 14 - 17 during the 2024 year. 2024 plans are to have the girls in the Starlight Parade, riding on the Navy ships from Astoria to Portland, as well as life jacket fitting events for corporate events. Please let us know if you have interested girls by emailing them at this LINK.

Update on Where do you take expired Marine Flares for disposal?

Like many of you who have boated for more than a couple of years, I tend to acquire a lot of expired marine flares. I put some in my cars UPDATE - Do NOT use Marine Flares in highway situations, they are considered too bright for that purpose and can be a danger if used that way to other motorists. keep some as expired spares on the boat, but still I seem to have collected a fair number of flares and wondered where I could turn them in safely. I live in Vancouver and what I found was the Police Department is the place to take them. Similar to Fireworks was the explanation I was given. Not the Fire Department. I took my flares to the Vancouver Police Department, and it was an easy drop off. No cost.

In Portland however calls to the Police department did not get the same answer. I stopped by Hayden Island Fire Station, and they didn't take them either but said to call Metro. I sent a request in to Metro and the response was quick that they are considered Hazardous Waste, and to take them to a Metro Hazardous Waste disposal site. Free of charge.

Now you can clear out that corner of the boathouse or garage of outdated flares.

What is the Rain Tax?

Multnomah County's Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) Storm water management Division is currently trying to add a service tax/fee to all over the water floating structures for Rain Water related reasons. It matters not, that all of this rainwater goes directly into the rivers/streams/lakes off of these structures. This means docks/decks, boat houses, and floating homes could soon see an increase in their city fees. The Waterfront Organizations Of Oregon (WOOO) is taking this fight on with Portland's City Council and Needs your help in making it known that we all see that this is truly a money grab as no services will come from this for your over the water structures. Please follow this link to see the WOOO newsletter asking that we all send letters to Commissioner Mingus Mapps. This is time sensitive as they are hearing this in chambers next week. Please, write, email and if possible show up in person to reject this horrible idea.

Sample Letters as well as more information is available HERE.

Please be advised that not all Lifejackets are created equal and are not USCG Approved!

Hello everyone –

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and in the mood for rain and cold weather. I, myself am already missing the warm weather.

Attached are several photos of an inflatable life jacket that is not approved by USCG, even though they have one line that states it does. Amazon is selling several inflatables that are not USCG approved. Please educate people if you see someone wearing one; make sure the cartridge is placed correctly in the mechanism, not USCG complaint, they can wear it but must have another USCG-approved life jacket in the boat for each person wearing a non-approved life jacket. If they don’t have another life jacket(s), USCG-approved in the boat they could be cited. Advise them to test the inflation (inflate by mouth at home and leave overnight) every six months or less depending on how much they use it.

Keep your eye out. Contact me if you have any further questions.
