WHAT?: The Transcend Madison Innovation competition is a pitch competition held every spring here at UW-Madison. Styled similarly to Shark Tank, competitors pitch their idea to a panel of judges. At the end of the competition, these judges will award the most deserving competitors with prizes from our $50,000 prize pool.

HOW?: Using this link, any student at UW may sign up before the signup deadline on March 10th. After March 10th, competitors must complete our competition documents and attend the two mandatory development events before April 2nd. All relevant dates can be found on our website.

WHO?: You! Currently enrolled students at UW with any promising product idea. In years past, we have seen everything from apps to boardgames to biomedical devices to fully fleshed-out business plans. As the subject line reads: All it takes is an idea.

WHEN/WHERE?: This year's competition is presented by D2P and will take place in the Discovery Building on April 13th and 14th. The competition will take the majority of both days, and the award ceremony will take place at the end of the second day.

Undergraduate Research Fellowship Opportunities

Sophomore Research Fellowships support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW–Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff during summer 2023 or the 2023-24 academic year. The student researcher receives $2,500, and the faculty/staff research advisor receives $500 to help offset research costs. At the time of application, the student must be a second-year undergraduate, a first-year undergraduate who will have more than 24 credits after May 2023, or a transfer student in their first year of attendance at UW–Madison. Apply by February 28, 2023.

Public Humanities Exchange for Undergraduates (HEX-U) is a high-impact program for undergraduate students that funds humanities-based projects that support a need in the Madison community beyond the university. The program provides training in community partnership, support for project development and implementation, and funding. Participating students receive a $600 stipend award and up to $2,000 in project funding. Students are encouraged to propose new, innovative ideas for engagement with the local community through a project. Apply for the spring 2023 cohort by Monday, February 6 (early-bird deadline) and Monday, March 27, 2023 (final deadline).

Good Resources for Job Searching?

Where should you look for job postings? There are dozens of websites, but the sites below are good starting points:

Handshake is a great first stop for students. Every job on this site is posted with UW students and grads in mind. The site also has networking, employer research, and event registration that is very helpful for students.

LinkedIn lets you apply to jobs, and then network with people around the job.

Dice - technical job postings

ZipRecruiter - automated “suggested jobs” algorithms

Monster - one of the classic job board sites

Indeed - a job board that crawls the web to find as many jobs as possible.

Glassdoor posts jobs, and is also a great place to research market and salary trends.
