NEW COURSE ALERT!

CS 544 - Introduction to Big Data Systems

The Comp Sci department is excited to announce a new course for Fall 2023! CS 544 - Intro to Big Data Systems with Professor Tyler Caraza-Harter will have students learn how to deploy and use distributed systems to store and analyze large datasets. Unstructured and structured approaches to storage will be covered. Analysis will involve learning new query languages, processing streaming data, and training machine learning models. Systems covered will include Docker, PyTorch, HDFS, Spark, Cassandra, Kafka, and more. Check out the course website here: https://tyler.caraza-harter.com/cs544/s23/schedule.html


There will be two sections of this course offered - check out Course Search and Enroll for details! For Comp Sci students, this course will count for CS major requirements as a Comp Sci Software/Hardware course or Comp Sci elective.

Why Should I Participate?


To enhance your product thinking skills (aka skills that help you refine and perfect your entrepreneurial ideas - read this article to familiarize yourself with the term more), and to utilize the competition as a platform to gain credibility amongst employers for Product Management roles!

What is the Structure Like?


It'll be divided into two days, with a gap in between:

  • Day 1: Attend events given by PMs in the industry about domain-specific topics as well as the techniques we'd like you to implement. Further, we'll assign you a case to work on.
  • A gap of a few days during which you can finish working on the case.
  • Day 2: The second day will be a pitch day for your product idea on that provided case, and winners will be announced!
  • 

One key thing to note is that for this first iteration of the competition, we're limiting our scope to tech-enabled products: think Instagram, Figma, Uber, Slack, etc.

Who is Eligible?


1. Any class standing (Freshman to Graduate level)

2. An individual or a team of a maximum of four people (each person must fill out the interest form separately)

Rec Well


Wellness Coaching Program

Centered around the seven aspects of wellbeing (health, meaning, safety, connection, growth, achievement, and resiliency), Rec Well's wellness coaching program is an opportunity to reflect on your wellbeing and go after your goals in an encouraging and collaborative environment. With the belief that each person is the expert on their own wellbeing, our wellness coaches are there to support you as you work towards wellness goals that are meaningful to you.

 

Our coaches are NASPA-certified Peer Educators who are trained in motivational interviewing, campus resources, suicide prevention, and mindfulness.

 

We currently offer one-on-one coaching in either a virtual or in-person format that is flexible to your schedule. Wellness coaching is free and available to all current UW-Madison students. All are welcome in this space, and discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated. Receive a free Rec Well swag item of your choice at your first session!

Computer Sciences Scholarships for Spring 2023 are now available for applying in the Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH)! There are four (4) scholarships specific to continuing Computer Sciences students:

Looking for a study abroad experience that immerses you in local culture?


Hoping to study abroad while at UW-Madison but not sure how to pay for it?


Interested in becoming a lifelong member of a global alumni network?

 

The Brittingham Viking Organization is a Madison-based scholarship organization that offers various scholarships to study in Scandinavia. The organization is currently offering multiple  scholarships for undergraduate or graduate UW-Madison students in any major or program for January–August 2024, to either Copenhagen, Stockholm, or Helsinki for spring semester, with all scholars spending the summer together in Oslo. These scholarships are fully funded, designed to cover tuition, housing, airfare, and travel and living stipends

 

All classes are taught in English and scholars are given the chance to travel across the Nordic countries meeting alumni of the program. There is a lively network of alumni in Madison and around the world ready to welcome new scholars with open arms!

Undergraduate Research Fellowship Opportunities

Public Humanities Exchange for Undergraduates (HEX-U) is a high-impact program for undergraduate students that funds humanities-based projects that support a need in the Madison community beyond the university. The program provides training in community partnership, support for project development and implementation, and funding. Participating students receive a $600 stipend award and up to $2,000 in project funding. Students are encouraged to propose new, innovative ideas for engagement with the local community through a project. Apply for the spring 2023 cohort by Monday, March 27, 2023 (final deadline).

College of Letters & Science’s Teaching & Learning Administration is hiring an Academic Data Analyst!

Our TLA unit sits at the intersection of budget, human resources, academic planning, and departments as it relates to instruction. Our unit's mission is operational, and many interactions and projects are of ‘here and now’ type. We are looking for someone who is practical, creative, and responsive to the changing landscape.


The analyst will use available institutional data and information from different sources on campus to synthesize, provide data analysis, and create tools and reports to assist with strategic decision making both at the college level and department level. Examples could include: 

·        Course Access: develop automated analytic approaches that help the college

understand enrollment trends, monitor the first-year enrollment registration

period, and identify where we might expect to have capacity gaps, especially

in critical courses.


·        Instructional Budgeting: Support college-level budgetary decisions by

providing data and analysis as it relates to credits, courses, and payroll.


·        Curricular and Instructional consulting: Provide consultation, curricular and

student outcome data and analysis for departmental initiatives to improve

student learning.

Natural Language Processing Python Position w/ Research Credit and Potential Authorship

Dr. Tim Rogers, Dr. Junjie Hu, and Sean Yun-Shiuan Chuang (PhD student) are looking for a student to join their research project. This opportunity includes research credits and potential for authorship on a publication.

 

The project involves using large language models, such as GPT-3, to annotate different features of various large language datasets, such as stance and sentiment. They are currently seeking a talented student who is fluent in Python and interested in running experiments with different prompt-based methods to improve the model performance. They are using Python, HuggingFace, and PyTorch in the project.

“I graduate in two months and I haven’t even started job searching….Help!”



Does this sound like you? Don’t panic -- here’s a quick checklist to get you started! 


  • Write your resume. If you have a resume already, update it and polish it for the jobs you hope to apply for. 
  • If you don’t have a resume, you’ll find resources for writing one on our website. 
  • Look at job postings, even if you aren’t ready to apply yet. Reading real job descriptions will let you see which job(s) interest you, and will give you clues about what skills/experiences to include on your resume. 
  • Tell everyone you know. Job searching can be a long process, and it can sometimes be frustrating. Getting your friends, family, professors and peers in tune with your search will let them better support you through the process. 
  • Also, you never know who might know about a really cool company that’s hiring!
