Undergraduate Research Fellowship Opportunities!

Application Deadlines Coming Up Soon!

Sophomore Research Fellowships support undergraduate research done in collaboration with UW–Madison faculty or research/instructional academic staff during summer 2024 or the 2024-25 academic year. The student researcher receives $2,500, and the faculty/staff research advisor receives $500 to help offset research costs. At the time of application, the student must be a second-year undergraduate, a first-year undergraduate who will have more than 24 credits after May 2024, or a transfer student in their first year of attendance at UW–Madison. Apply by February 26, 2024.

Lakeshore Nature Preserve Student Engagement Grants of up to $1000 each are available to facilitate the use of the Preserve as a resource for education among UW undergraduates. Any student, faculty, or staff member at the UW-Madison may apply. Groups of individuals may submit a proposal as a team. Every individual or team must have at least one faculty or staff member, who is expected to play an active role in overseeing the project. Apply by March 1, 2024. Funds should be expended by October 31, 2024 when a final report is due. 

Public Humanities Exchange for Undergraduates (HEX-U) is a high-impact program for undergraduate students that funds humanities-based projects that support a need in the Madison community beyond the university. The program provides training in community partnership, support for project development and implementation, and funding. Participating students receive a $600 stipend award and up to $2,000 in project funding. Students are encouraged to propose new, innovative ideas for engagement with the local community through a project. Apply for the fall 2024 cohort by March 18.

Coastal zones host critical ecosystems and infrastructure, so it’s of growing concern that these areas are increasingly exposed to dramatic climate events. Using satellite data and AI, challenge participants will design predictive models to help endangered communities build a more stable and sustainable future. Top entries are eligible for up to $10,000 in cash and a trip to Athens, Greece in July.

The 2024 Undergraduate Symposium application is open!

The Undergraduate Symposium is an annual event that offers undergraduate students from all areas of study at UW-Madison the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their research, scholarly pursuits, service-learning, community-based research, art, and creativity. It also serves as a forum for the campus community to learn about and engage with undergraduate work.

The 2024 Undergraduate Symposium will be held on: Thursday, April 25^th, 2024 at Union South.

TAPIA 2024 Scholarships and Call for Participation

The Call for Participation for Tapia 2024 is now open! TAPIA invites you to submit any of the following program components: 

• Panels and Workshops: Sessions on current technical topics such as AI, quantum computing, and cybersecurity, as well as topics related to broadening participation in computing and professional development for diverse communities

• Birds of a Feather (BoF): Sessions that provide an informal, town-hall like forum for the discussion of technical or social issues among interested parties, providing a venue for communities (existing or dynamically organized) to network and collaborate

• Scholarships: Students and post-docs at institutions in the U.S. or U.S. Territories and faculty at Minority Serving Institutions are welcome to apply for a Tapia scholarship

• Student Posters/ACM Student Research Competition (SRC): Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to present their latest research results and methodologies

• Doctoral Consortium: PhD candidates have the opportunity to present and discuss their research with a panel of established researchers

Undergraduate Research Experience Opportunity:

Big Data Analytics and Machine Learning + International Experience in Chile

Selected participants will get involved in research related to big data analytics and machine learning. Participants will also gain an appreciation of the research field via software development and engineering activities and field trips.

Participants will receive a stipend (up to $6,000), room and board, funding for travel to and from NDSU (up to $700) as well as to and from NDSU to Santiago, Chile (up to $1,500).

The summer 2024 REU program will run from May 20 until July 26, 2024. Application review will begin from February 15, 2024 and continue until all positions have been filled.

Participating undergraduates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States who are enrolled in undergraduate degree programs. Women and members of traditionally underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. In addition, all participants must possess a valid passport for the travel to Chile.

Spring CIA Campus Events This Week!

L&S SOAR Peer Advisor Summer Positions Available

AI Research Internships for Undergraduates

Hosted by Johns Hopkins University's

Center for Language and Speech Processing

This summer, Johns Hopkins University's Center for Language and Speech Processing is hosting the Tenth Frederick Jelinek Memorial Summer Workshop and is seeking outstanding rising seniors at U.S. universities to participate in this eight-week human language technologies (HLT) workshop.

This highly-selective residential program, which will be held on JHU's Homewood campus in Baltimore from June 10 to August 2, includes:

• A comprehensive two-week summer school on HLT
• A six-week intensive project-based research experience

The workshop is an intense, dynamic intellectual environment and undergraduates will work alongside senior researchers as part of a multi-university research team that will focus on an HLT problem of current interest. Many of our past undergraduate participants have gone on to pursue graduate studies in HLT and AI.

Teams/topics under consideration this year include:

• AI-curated democratic discourse
• Sign LLM, large sign language model
• Evaluating LLM performance in research astronomy
• Multimodal multi-task audio-visual transformer

Participating undergraduates will receive:

• The opportunity to explore an exciting new area of research
• A two-week tutorial on current speech and language technology
• Mentoring by experienced researchers
• Participation in project planning activities
• Use of cloud computing services
• A $6,000 stipend and $2,800 towards meals and incidental expenses
• Furnished accommodation for the duration of the workshop
• Travel expenses to and from the workshop venue

Image Processing Technician w/ The Dawson Lab

Title: Image Processing Technician - Chestnuts

Description: The Dawson Lab at the University of Wisconsin seeks two part-time technicians (~20 hours per week) to assist in a chestnut research study. The technicians will work under the instruction of an imagery analyst and tree crop breeder for five months (March-August 2024). This project aims to develop, train, and optimize a deep learning-based model for automatic detection, segmentation, and enumeration of chestnut burrs in multispectral drone imagery.

Additionally, this project aims to train a deep learning-based model for 3D object detection to detect and segment individual chestnut tree canopies from photogrammetry-derived point clouds. The anticipated result is an automated image-processing pipeline that relates chestnut yield to individual chestnut trees using drones and artificial intelligence. This framework will enable chestnut breeders to efficiently and effectively assess individual trees for target breeding objectives. The technician can anticipate assisting with identifying chestnut burrs in drone imagery and creating annotated imagery datasets for training various deep-learning algorithms.
