MadHacks Fall 2023 Hackathon

November 11-12th: Educational Sciences Building

🚨 MadHacks Applications are OPEN 🚨

Apply now: https://madhacks.io/

What's a Hackathon?

Hackathons are a 24-hour event where teams of up to four have a friendly competition to create the best projects, products, and more. Food, prizes, mentorship, and events are all available.

When and Where are MadHacks?

MadHacks will take place this fall on November 11th-12th, 2023 in the Educational Sciences Building here on campus!

Why should I join a Hackathon?

Hackathons give you the environment to make amazing, fulfilling projects in a short amount of time surrounded by driven individuals. Hackathons are also a great way to make projects to put on your resume (the free food and swag doesn't hurt, either)

Do I know enough to join a Hackathon?

YES. Hackathons are made to be beginner friendly. Mentorship, talks, and workshops are available, which all allow you to grow your abilities quickly. We'll be better equipped to support beginners this semester than our last event in spring :)

Wisconsin AI Safety Initiative (WAISI) Program Pipelines

The Wisconsin AI Safety Initiative is a community that aims to mitigate the risks that increasingly capable artificial intelligence brings to the world. (see our programming and apply here!)

Already, we can see some unintended negative consequences of AI advancement causing harm today: discrimination in housing, healthcare, and policing, political deepfakes and misinformation, empowering surveillance capabilities of oppressive regimes.

For the same reasons that preventing these outcomes are difficult – alignment and governance challenges – we can expect that even larger scale risks are on the horizon.

Nearer term, we can expect bad actors to be empowered by AI technology to potentially engineer novel bioweapons that could spark pandemics, launch larger scale cyberattacks than ever before, and more.

Longer term, we ought to worry about potential risks from autonomous self-directed AI agents which may be deceptive in behaving well under observation but pursuing its true goals when not surveilled or power seeking in instrumentally disempowering humanity in order to more optimally pursue its terminal goals.

Come join the Wisconsin AI Safety Initiative to gain a holistic understanding of the risks and then build the skills to solve them in AI alignment and AI governance.

Career Tips

Juggling Multiple Offers

So you’ve had an offer come through. Maybe even multiple offers. What do you do??

First, take a deep breath, and take stock of your situation:

  • What are the details of the offer(s)?
  • How do they compare to your goal, or to your other offers?

It can help to make a “pros and cons” list to lay your options out in front of you.

Ask questions of the HR contact. Their job is to get you ready for your new job, and that includes answering all your questions! You will never be a pest when inquiring about the details of a job offer.

Finally, it’s okay to ask for time to think. You rarely need to make a decision immediately after receiving an offer. Thank the recruiter and ask “When do you need to hear back from me?” Then, take the time to do the steps above.

You’ll find tons of useful Negotiation Resources on SuccessWorks’ website.

Still need help? Make an appointment with a SuccessWorks Career Advisor to talk about your offer.
