Meet an Alum: John Mak, BS '20
|
I’m currently an Associate Software Developer at Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 company. It was my first job out of college, and a lot of my work focuses on Java application development, where we’re given a broad objective and can use any of our available infrastructure tools to achieve it.
[...] The breadth of skills and knowledge I had accrued through my classes allowed me to cinch a high-paying job at a prestigious company within a month of graduation. I think a lot of the core CS classes like Operating Systems and the latter main Java modules really helped me develop my problem-solving skills, since we’re usually given a fair amount of freedom to attack a project however we wish. I also credit the Foundation of Mobile Systems and Applications class (CS407) for teaching me how to plan for large-scale software projects, as well as how to collaborate effectively on code repository tools like Github.
Lastly, I have to mention Coding For Good, a CS club (of which I was a member) that creates all sorts of applications for charity. I met some of the most talented individuals in our field there, and the knowledge I learned from them was priceless.
