BREED IMPROVEMENT

Calving Cows with a Hair Sample

Among the many reasons we would DNA test an animal with a 30K or 50K test is to increase the accuracy of that animal's EPD. Often the question is asked as to how much the DNA test can impact the resulting EPD and accuracy. An estimated progeny equivalent is the average number of progeny records it would take to see an equivalent change in accuracy from a genomic test.  For example, if a non-parent animal is genotyped, the accuracy of his/her EPD is akin to an animal that has already produced 5 offspring with a carcass weight record (see table below).  Overtime, these estimates will change as statistical models are improved, the number of phenotypes increases, and the information from genomic data improves. Simple parentage, color and polled tests do not contribute to the genomic EPD, however 30K and 50K (and 50K Combo) tests will contribute directly to the tested animal's genetic evaluation.
