THE HERD LETTER FOR 2017 IS "E"

Lab Results Reported to CSA
Two times each week Delta Genomics uploads completed test results to their LIMS (Lab Information Management System). The CSA office then accesses the LIMS and downloads any results that are available. The results are updated in our Herdbook and are reviewed for accuracy. If the sire/dam of the animal being tested has DNA on file with CSA, the lab will run a comparison to the parent(s) and determine whether the animal verifies to sire/dam.  There are three critical areas on the parentage report: sire qualification, dam qualification and sire/dam qualification as a mated pair.

There are 4 possible outcomes if both the sire and the dam have DNA on file with CSA
  • the animal qualifies to both sire/dam
  • the animal does not qualify to sire/dam - (result is an exclusion)
  • the animal qualifies to dam, but does not qualify to sire - (result is an exclusion)
  • the animal qualifies to sire, but does not qualify to dam -  (result is an exclusion)
Once the records are downloaded/submitted, an animal that is registered/on file and is flagged as an exclusion, is automatically suspended pending DNA verification or a pedigree update. Also suspended - are any progeny from the excluded animal that are registered/on file in the CSA Herdbook.

If only one (or the other) sire/dam has DNA on file, the animal that was tested is only compared to that parent. If the parent animal does not qualify, the exclusion procedure is followed as described above.  If neither parent has DNA on file, the animal's DNA result is simply placed on file and downloaded as a permanent genotype.

Embryo Transplants
For calves propagated by embryo transplants by the owner of the donor dam in the event more than one calf results from a single flush, one animal per flush must be parent verified. If more than one sire is used, each resultant calf must be parent verified.
If embryos are sold by the owner of the donor dam, on embryo offspring out of the group of embryos sold per individual must be parent verified.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF SIMMENTAL IN CANADA!

50th Anniversary Celebratory Events
It's hard to believe that it's been 50 years since the first Simmental bull, Parisien, was imported to Canada. This was an event that created history and changed the Canadian Beef Industry. Since then, the Simmental breed has been a tremendous success story as it has progressed into becoming one of the most influential beef cattle breeds in North America.

Simmental breeders from across Canada are preparing to celebrate our 50th Anniversary during these events. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to join the excitement!

CANADIAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION'S AWARD OF EXCELLENCE PROGRAM

Introducing the Canadian Simmental Association's Award of Excellence Program (AOE). The CSA AOE program is being created to promote and recognize the top Simmental bulls and females that are exhibited at shows across the country each year. Each Provincial Simmental Association has selected two shows that will qualify for the Award of Excellence Program (same day shows may both count for 1 but exhibitors may only enter animals at 1 of the 2 shows).Bulls and females exhibited at these qualifying shows will be recognized through a points based system that will be used to calculate Awards of Excellence honors.

For rules and regulations click here.

A reminder to all of the Provincial and Regional Associations that all Simmental cattle need to be tattooed and registered, not only to qualify for points but as per CSA regulation rules at all shows. It is up to each Association to ensure that registration papers and tattoos are being checked!

Due to the generous donations from breeders and industry from across Canada and the hard working committee of Lacey Fisher, Deanne Young, Jennie Mutch, Laura Parsons, Heather Creamer, Ken Lewis, Brian Bouchard, Marlin LeBlanc and Mark Shologan the event was a huge success. Thank you to the team of Bouchard Livestock International for the sale management and the staff of the CSA for their assistance. There was lots of activity of those viewing and bidding during the live auction on DLMS.ca

The high selling lot of the evening was the Lot 1 bred heifer that was donated by the Robblee Family, Tryon Simmentals. Through the auctioning of $20 bids, the heifer commanded a total of $15,180.00. The winner of the bred heifer was Lewis Farms, Spruce Grove, AB. Thank you to Frank and his family for their support of the FCSF Auction.

The second high selling lot of the evening was the Limited Edition #1 buckle celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Simmental Association. It was purchased by the syndicate consisting of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Simmental Association and staff members of the CSA.
