Safeguarding America’s Most Dangerous Workplaces

Across the United States, thousands of workers face serious, and sometimes fatal, hazards simply by doing their jobs. In 2023, 5,283 workplace fatalities were reported nationwide. When measured per 100,000 workers, fatality rates highlight the elevated risks in certain occupations. Industries such as logging, commercial fishing, aviation, refuse collection, and roofing consistently rank among the most dangerous, exposing workers to falls, transportation incidents, confined spaces, excessive noise, airborne contaminants, and struck-by hazards.

Industrial hygienists play a critical role in identifying and reducing these risks before injuries or illnesses occur. At Clark Seif Clark, Inc., industrial hygiene professionals deliver consulting, monitoring, testing, and training services designed to minimize workplace hazards and support regulatory compliance.

How Building Water Systems Can Impact Health: Understanding Legionella Risks

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently launched a new educational resource titled Legionella in the Indoor Environment, highlighting the growing importance of managing these waterborne bacteria in buildings. Legionella occurs naturally in lakes, streams, ponds, and other freshwater environments, as well as in some soils. However, it can also colonize man-made water systems, including building plumbing and water distribution systems.

Health risks arise when Legionella disease bacteria (LDB) multiply and spread within a building’s water system, such as in pipes and water-using devices. Showerheads, sink faucets, humidifiers, and similar equipment can generate mist or fine water droplets that may carry the bacteria into the air. Infection can occur when individuals inhale these contaminated droplets.
