OSHA’s New Top 10 Citations List and Ways to Prevent Workplace Injuries, Illnesses and Costly Noncompliance Penalties
|
Millions of workers are injured or develop occupational illnesses each year. Sadly, as recently as 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports there were also 4,764 fatal occupational injuries that year alone.
Employers are responsible for providing safe working conditions for all of their employees. To protect workers, there are a number of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards that are enforced by the agency.

Candida auris and Infection Control Resources for Healthcare Providers
Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant microorganism that was first identified in 2009 in Asia. It has quickly become a cause of severe infections around the world, including in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is as yeast, which is a type of fungi.
CDC describes Candida auris as a concerning drug-resistant fungus because it is:
- Often multidrug-resistant, with some strains resistant to all three available classes of antifungals
- Can cause outbreaks in healthcare facilities
- Some common healthcare disinfectants are less effective at eliminating it
- Can be carried on patients’ skin without causing infection, allowing spread to others
The agency goes on to report that it can also be spread in healthcare settings through contact with contaminated environmental surfaces or equipment. CDC even warns that patients and residents in healthcare facilities often remain colonized with C. auris for many months, perhaps indefinitely, even after acute infection (if present) has been treated and resolves.
“For most healthy individuals, the risk of infection from C. auris is relatively low, but that is not the case for some hospitalized patients with a weakened immune system,” said Franco Seif, President of Clark Seif Clark (CSC). “For those patients, it could cause wound infections, ear infections and bloodstream infections that can spread throughout the body. These invasive infections can be fatal.”
To help protect patients, workers and the public from exposure risks to C. auris and other microbial pathogens, the infection control and industrial hygiene professionals at CSC provide training, testing and consulting services to clients nationwide. CSC has even sponsored an educational video about C. auris that can be seen below:
