CSD 2025 Hill Day

Mark your calendar for the upcoming CSD Hill Day from May 18 - 20, 2025! We're excited to head to Washington, D.C. to advocate on behalf of the 84 million Americans with a skin disease. In addition to meeting with legislators to discuss the CSD's legislative and policy priorities, we'll have prominent speakers and advocacy training. Please be on the lookout in the coming months for more information on how to apply, and you can read through the CSD's Hill Day 2024 Report here.

CSD at FMX

Last month marked a significant milestone for the CSD as we exhibited for the first time at the American Academy of Family Physicians' annual conference, FMX.

Executive Director, Kelly Barta, had the privilege of representing our coalition and engaging with many of the over 4,000 dedicated healthcare professionals. This opportunity allowed us to raise vital awareness about skin diseases and the invaluable support our member organizations provide to patients and their families.

We were truly inspired by the enthusiasm and appreciation expressed by physicians and residents, who conveyed a strong need for resources to better assist their skin disease patients, and we are delighted to share that every single one of our CSD QR stickers designed to connect patients with support organizations was eagerly picked up by healthcare providers!

These QR stickers, which affix to the back of HCP medical badges, lead patients directly to our CSD webpage, where they can explore our member organizations and discover essential resources. Together, we are making a meaningful difference!

Big congratulations to CSD Member, SAF, for the introduction of new ICD-10-CM Codes for Scarring Alopecia, as a result of their great efforts!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially approved the ICD-10-CM codes for Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA) and Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA), L66.81 and L66.12, respectively. These new codes will be effective starting October 2024, thanks to the collaborative support and advocacy from patients, dedicated dermatologists, nurses, physician assistants, professional dermatologic societies, and patient-focused dermatology organizations. The CSD is proud to have been a strong supporter of this effort. Please see this message from the Scarring Alopecia Foundation's Executive Director, Jean Pickford, to learn more about this exciting development!

Legislative and Policy Updates

Congress Faces End of Month Funding Deadline

Congress recently passed a short-term government funding bill, or continuing resolution (CR), and averted a looming government funding deadline of October 1 (the start of the government's fiscal year). President Biden quickly signed the bill into law, which extends government funding through December 20, 2024. The House and Senate are both in recess during the month of October and are expected to be back on Capitol Hill on November 12.

Earlier this year, the CSD submitted congressional testimony to the House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, and Human Services with its funding priorities for Fiscal Year 2024. Read the CSD's full testimony here.

Fall is a busy conference season for many of the CSD's members. Please take a look at some of the conferences and meetings being held in the coming weeks:

Patient Group Learning and Other Engagement Opportunities

Would you be willing to share resources to help others in the CSD? Many of our

members have mentioned how beneficial it would be to have a repository of helpful guides they

could glean from to inform their own work and minimize the need to start from scratch, which

would save tons of precious time and elevate our whole community.

If you have templates or examples of organizational policies, fundraising strategies, patient

conference planning, email drip campaigns, and the like, please share them! You can easily

upload those documents here.

FDA Webinars and Engagement Opportunities

On October 1, 2024, the FDA launched a reorganization effort. The Stakeholder Engagement Staff (within the Office of External Affairs) and the Patient Affairs Staff (formerly within the Office of Clinical Policy and Programs) merged into one larger new team – the Public Engagement Staff within the Office of External Affairs. Through the new Public Engagement Staff, patient advocacy groups and other interested parties can engage with the Office of the Commissioner and other FDA centers and offices on agency priorities. For patient specific inquiries, please contact Patients Ask FDA. For other inquiries, please e-mail PublicEngagement@fda.hhs.gov.
