A Message from Our President
Dear :
Although COVID-19 continues to challenge our lives, I am so glad to see that overall vaccination rates are high and hospitalizations have remained relatively low. We have even begun to see familiar faces again as we replace some of our Zooms with meetings in person. Much of the ground that has been gained over the past two years has been a direct result of your hard work and support. I can think of few groups that have had a greater impact on this progress than you, our Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians. Thank you for all you do.
As we transitioned from fall to spring, CSHP has continued working to offer you valuable programming to stay current in the pharmacy profession. In April, CSHP co-hosted our annual Connecticut Compounding Conference in collaboration with CPA and ASCP-CT. This year’s conference featured some fantastic speakers from across New England and offered the opportunity to earn 6 CE credits on a variety of topics. In May, CSHP hosted our 3rd annual CT Pharmacy Residency Conference, where all CT residents have the opportunity to present their research. A select few from the conference have the opportunity to present their research at our annual “The Great Eight” evert.
In addition to our CE programming, CSHP has continued to work towards the accomplishment of our strategic goals. Some examples include:
· Defining specific goals for our new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force
· Advocating on behalf of the pharmacy profession on a number of legislative initiatives
· Offering PTCB Certified Immunizer Training for Pharmacy Technicians
· Increasing engagement with pharmacists in industry through the creation of a roundtable series
We are proud of our accomplishments so far this year, and as we continue to grow through our many challenges, we want to hear from you! Membership in CSHP is critical to sustaining our mission. Please encourage your colleagues to join or renew at Join CSHP. You can make a difference in your job, your career and our profession by joining a CSHP committee. Think about your pharmacy passion and sign up for one of our committees or task forces by visiting our website - Get Involved.
We hope to see you soon at our upcoming Tri-State and Catch the Wave Conferences, or one of many other CE events this year.

A Message from the Pharmacy Technician Task Force Co-Chair
Mounia Belica, CPhT
CSHP Pharmacy Technician Taskforce is working tirelessly to develop a survey to understand the perception of pharmacy technicians and employers about the pharmacy career advancement and growth opportunities in Connecticut. Our goal is to present the data and analysis at the Catch the Wave event and publish the study on one of the pharmacy news outlets.
Seven participants in the immunization administration training program were unable to participate so we subsequently offered the open positions to the waiting list on a first come first serve basis.
CSHP pharmacy technician taskforce is pleased to welcome new members to the taskforce. If you are interested in joining the Taskforce please reach out to Mounia (Mounia.Belica@YNHH.ORG) or Tiffany (Tiffany.Gray@YNHH.ORG).

PTCB continues to offer new credentials and assessment based certificates for pharmacy technicians to improve employee performance, lower turnover and reduce time and expense to train and advance pharmacy technicians. Learn more about PTCB's credentials.

Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) in Antithrombin Deficiency
Submitted. by Christelle Bibo-Ekodi, PharmD Candidate
There is a delicate balance between procoagulant and anticoagulant factors that regulate clot formation. Disruption of this balance can lead to excessive bleeding or clotting. Antithrombin is an endogenous anticoagulant that inhibits factor IIa (thrombin), VII, IX, X, XI, XII1. The normal range for antithrombin level is 80% to 100%, and deficiency is typically below 80%1. Antithrombin deficiency can be categorized in several ways. Acquired deficiency refers to a transient decrease in antithrombin due to an acute illness1. Inherited deficiency occurs when a mutation in the antithrombin gene1. This disorder affects 1%-5% of patients diagnosed with venous thromboembolism (VTE) per year2. Although rare, 50% of patients with this disorder develop a VTE by age 50 with an increased risk of recurrence2. Vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), such as warfarin, are typically used to prevent VTE recurrence; however, due to the lack of available data, guidance on management is limited2. Although DOACs are the preferred treatment for VTE, patients with antithrombin deficiency are seldom represented in that clinical trials2. However, there are case reports documenting the successful use DOACs in this patient population.

It feels as though this last semester went just as quickly as it came. In a few short days the Class of 2022 will be graduating and moving on to the next big step in their professional careers. We want to congratulate all our graduating students and wish them well on all their future endeavors. The Class of 2023 has almost completely wrapped up their final didactic year and will be embarking on their APPEs in June. Everyone is so excited to step out of the classroom and into practice to finally put all our clinical knowledge to the test. The Class of 2024 is completing their second to last IPPE and will be starting the last semester of their P1 year in June. We wish them well as they start to transition to the therapeutics portion of the curriculum which has proven to be challenging.

As UConn wraps up the school year with final exams, UConn SSHP would like to revisit the events that were held this semester! A notable and favorite event of UConn SSHP is undoubtedly the Florence Mill Blood Pressure Clinic where student pharmacists visit an assisted-living facility and record residents’ blood pressure. This was done on two separate occasions this semester, and the students and residents alike were thrilled to see familiar and new faces. We also conducted our Residency Director Panel, which was a huge success where students were able to hear advice from Residency Directors in CT and had a chance to interact in a small group setting! Next, we had a Clinical Specialist Panel where we invited four specialists to talk about their specialties! UConn SSHP was thrilled to listen and explore different specialties in the world of pharmacy! Finally, to end off the semester, UConn SSHP hosted a Well-being and Resiliency Workshop where we shared ways for well-being and self-care.
At UConn, our members are getting ready for summer break and looking forward to their IPPEs, APPEs, and internships. We hope to have more exciting and informational events next year as well!
