CEO's Blog: CSL Breaking Ground on New Building!

Three years  ago, CSL undertook a different approach to assessing needs in a community . We went directly to the people we served, and we asked them what they wanted, and how we could work together to achieve their goals. That simple act has changed so much about our work.

In CSL's traditional service catchment area of Eastern Jackson County, the Northwest Independence/Sugar Creek area has the highest rates of poverty indicators. Consider these statistics from the 64053 zip code (all courtesy of United States census data):

Donors Made the Difference in 2017!

2017 was a phenomenal year of impact for Community Services League! Because of your investment of time and resources in our mission, we were able to celebrate these incredible accomplishments:
  • We served more than 15,000 neighbors in our Eastern Jackson County communities
  • We began work at two new CSL sites - one in Excelsior Springs and one at Hawthorne Place Apartments in partnership with Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH)
  • We launched a second micro-branch of Holy Rosary Credit Union
  • We completed a fundraising campaign to renovate our 24 Highway location in the Northwest Independence/Sugar Creek area
  • We became nationally-certified to serve our disabled neighbors wanting to reenter the workforce
  • We were named Harvesters' Agency of the Year for excellence in impact
  • We established the Dr. Cliff and Patty Mohn Early Education Initiative at Hawthorne to connect early education resources at local school districts to families in need
It was a year of changing lives forever in the battle against poverty.  Here are a few more ways your gift helped families served by CSL

Thank You Ken and Dottie Littlejohn - Faithful Volunteers in Blue Springs

Volunteer staff are the lifeblood of CSL. Collectively CSL
volunteers save the organization more than $750,000 annually by giving of their time at our  locations and helping us best serve our neighbors.

Ken and Dottie Littlejohn are two such supporters; they have been v olunteering at our Blue Springs office for the l ast three years! They came to us office ready to lend a hand in our warehouse and assist neighbors in need. Ken has overseen the warehouse for the last few years, keeps it organized and running, and takes great ownership in his work. He oversees the annual Community Unity Week event, ensuring that the more than 45,000 donations received from the Blue Springs School District are sorted and processed. Dottie is such a pleasure to have in the office as she provides kindness to our neighbors and greets each as if they are family. She enjoys making sure the office is tidy and inviting for all who come through the doors; she even caters lunches (including her famous chicken salad) for the team when special events are hosted onsite.

Both Ken and Dottie bring love and compassion to serve our local neighbors, and we are beyond grateful for the difference they make in our organization.  Join us in thanking Ken and Dottie , and follow their lead by volunteering at your local CSL today
Did You Resolve to Volunteer this Year?
Volunteers Needed for the 2018 Tax Season!

Each year, CSL serves hundreds of clients by providing a free tax preparation service through the  Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Individuals and families making $60,000 or less are eligible to use this service. Last year, 184 returns were prepared resulting in nearly  $150,000 in refunds  thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

As we begin to prepare for the 2018 tax season, CSL's Financial Coaching team needs your help! If you're interested in learning more about volunteering, please contact Financial Coaching Manager Valentine Reid. You can volunteer to serve as a tax preparer (in-person or virtually), greeter, or intake specialist! Training is provided to all participants.
