CSSA POSITION STATEMENT ON FIREARM PROHIBITION ORDERS

People, not objects, commit crime.

While many groups campaign against legal guns and legal gun ownership, we know firearms are harmless unless a person with evil intent picks it up and uses it to commit an evil act.

That's why we're pushing the government to strictly monitor over  443,000 people courts deem too dangerous to possess guns , not the 2.2 million people who the RCMP investigated and deemed trustworthy of firearm ownership.

If so-called advocacy groups are as concerned about public safety as they claim to be, we urge them to join us in calling on our government to take action against the 443,000 individuals with Firearm Prohibition Orders (FPOs) registered against them.

From 2014-2018, 5,550 criminals already prohibited from possessing firearms were arrested for violating their Firearm Prohibition Orders.

In November 2019 alone, we found news reports of 41 criminals arrested for violating their existing Firearm Prohibition Orders, along with numerous other charges. These individuals were previously banned from possessing firearms by the courts. (See full list below.)

Write or call Public Safety Minister Bill Blair today and politely demand he introduce legislation immediately requiring that every person with a Firearm Prohibition Order registered against them be held (at least) to the same standard as federally-licensed, RCMP-vetted firearm owners.

Demand those with Firearm Prohibition Orders registered against them be tracked daily in CPIC, just like licensed firearm owners.

Demand those with Firearm Prohibition Orders registered against them be forced to report change of address to the police or be subject to 2 years in prison, just like licensed firearm owners.

Instead of ignoring Canada's most violent offenders like many so-called advocacy groups insist, let's crack down on them instead.
