Message from Dr. Dawn Thilmany
Professor and Interim Department Head
| | As we wrap up our fall semester this month, it is an exciting time to reflect on the department's year. We have had lots of opportunities to celebrate excellence among our students, staff, faculty and industry partners (see a VERY long newsletter of celebrations below). Beyond being thankful for the amazing people in our HLA family and wider network, we want to let you all know we are thinking strategically of where we can have more impact. This winter we will be submitting a departmental assessment, including some goals for how we can align with our students, partners, College and University missions more effectively. Stay tuned for more on these goals in 2026! | |

WCRC Agrivoltaics Ribbon Cutting Event
October 30. 2025
| | |
October was a busy month as construction of the agrivoltaics (APV) system took place in the vineyard. Our team, including Horst, myself, and the grape research crew, helped unload the solar panels and place them in the vineyard rows for installation. This system is installed over a quarter-acre block of Chardonnay grapevines, a white wine variety.
Solar panels are designed to protect the grapevines while also generating electricity. This system will help us study how solar panels can support crop growth, yield, and produce clean energy at the same time.
This system installed at CSU's Western Colorado research center in Grand Junction.

Lindsay Burnette, Landscape Architecture, was awarded a Collaboratory grant from SoGES.
This was a competitive award, in its first year, offered by SoGES. Its aim is to create research and scholarship communities designed to bring together CSU faculty across disciplines to explore critical climate and sustainability challenges. Through discussion, synthesis, network-building, and early-stage ideation, these one-year funded groups will aim to foster inclusive engagement and deepen relationships across CSU’s faculty sustainability community.

Heath Mizer, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, attended the Grand Re-Opening of Finlay Park in Columbia, SC, on Nov. 15. Heath served as a lead designer for the park while working as a Senior Landscape Architect at Civitas in Denver.
“It was truly an honor to celebrate the re-opening of Finlay Park with a community that is so proud to have their crown jewel back,” said Mizer. “Finlay Park will offer a wide variety of experiences for visitors, including a new stage for large concerts, a splash pad, strolling gardens, an amenity stream, a destination playground, and renovated waterfall gardens.”
Heath is especially proud of the universal design strategies implemented throughout the project. “The previous design 30 years ago placed all the program elements on the hillside, making them inaccessible to wheelchair users. I made it a design priority to ensure that every destination in the park is accessible to people of all abilities.”

CSU Trial Gardens
Community Comments
| | |
CSU Trial Gardens are a beautiful part of Fort Collins. The gardens span nearly 3 acres on the east side of campus. Each year CSU Trial Gardens evaluates about 1,000 annual plant varieties and evaluate about 300 perennial plant varieties. The gardens are one of the top visited destinations in Northern Colorado. They provide a great outdoor learning lab for Horticulture students.
The gardens are maintained by Dr. Chad Miller and his team who volunteer hundreds of hours every year to make the Trial Gardens possible.
We have received comments from our community and would like to share some of them below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to tend to this beautiful garden. Walking in the area yesterday gave me the chance to learn lots of new things and about new plants. Please extend our gratitude to your staff for a job VERY well done"
~~
"Having lived in Fort Collins for 63 years, the old Fort Collins High School was attended by my 4 kids. When CSU got it, I could not have been happier. You and your expert students and faculty have done a magnificent job of designing one of the most beautiful places in Fort Collins."
~~
"My sister and I stopped by with our 97 year old mother today. We all attended Fort Collins High School and we know this garden and all that the horticulture and music departments have done for this grand old building. This spectacular plot of land is probably the best part of Fort Collins. To see her slowly walk though this garden and touch the beautiful flowers you have planted is a gift to her soul beyond measure. We want to bless each and every student and faculty member who has had any part to play in planning and developing this masterpiece for our community. This garden is a place of creativity, joy and beauty which enhances every person who sees, touches, and hears any of it for even a moment. It has touched our family and our mother in her last days more than you will ever know. Never give up the valuable work."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are deeply touched by all your kind words and appreciation. It truly means a lot and motivates us to continue to do the things we love and to delivery our best work every day.
Thank you Dr. Chad Miller and his team of staff, students and volunteers for making these gardens a sanctuary for our community.

Student Highlight
Makenzie Lee, PhD Candidate
| | |
Makenzie spent her summer working in campus greenhouses and at research plots testing edible-flower production! Why edible flowers you may ask? Well there are many heath benefits to eating edible annuals, and by planting them, home gardeners can enjoy gorgeous flowers year-round and harvest them to eat, all while supporting plant health and encouraging re-blooming. You can add your favorite flowers to dishes as garnishes, use them in drinks, or even give recipes a boost with new and unique flavors.
She loves sharing things, like trying new recipes, trying new food experiences. She wants people to be able to explore what different options are out there because some of these plants are pretty tasty and they can be good for you as well.
