RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

Central State University researcher

leads study to develop novel computational framework for groundwater contamination forecasting

Arunasalam Rahunanthan, Ph.D., PI for NSF $500,000 "Excellence in Research" Award

Dr. Arunasalam Rahunanthan, interim dean of the John W. Garland College of Engineering, Science, Technology, and Agriculture and professor of mathematics, is principal investigator for a $500,000 National Science Foundation's "Excellence in Research" award to work on “a novel computational framework for groundwater contamination forecasting." Dr. Rahunanthan and co-principal investigator Dr. Luis Felipe Pereira, professor of mathematical sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) will develop novel and computationally efficient multiscale strategies for sampling subsurface properties in aquifers.

As a practical application, the two researchers will also aim to use the framework to guide field engineers in determining the location of monitoring wells for a reliable prediction of contamination in underground flows.

Dr. Rahunanthan expects between four and five CSU mathematics and computer science majors to participate every year in the project by working with the PI, Co-PI, and graduate students at UTD over the three-year period of the study.

Story and photos by Crystal Duckett/Land-Grant Communications

Under the warm sun and a gentle breeze, the Central State University’s Seed to Bloom Botanical and Community Garden came alive on June 27 with “Plant, Sip, Jazz & Jam.” More than 30 participants gathered for an upbeat event that had everyone tapping their feet and swaying to the rhythm.

The CSU Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program, along with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), served up mocktails and light appetizers.

At 1:30 p.m., the stage was set for “The Outlet Band,” a local jazz ensemble known for their soulful tunes and infectious energy. As they struck the first chords, the garden transformed into a musical oasis, with the group belting out classic songs like ‘Killing Me Softly’ by the Fugees and ‘I Wish’ by Stevie Wonder. The groove was irresistible, and dancing was inevitable.

In the midst of the crowd, Penny, the CSU campus “resident” emotional support dog, stole hearts. But this event wasn’t just about jazz; it was about community. CSU faculty, staff, and students mingled, sharing stories and laughter.

Renita Porter, program leader for FCS program, offered insightful perspectives on Extension and FCS. Brian M. Kampman, vegetable and small fruit technician, took the mic to share his expertise. Dr. Karen Mathews, executive director of Health and Psychological Services, provided much-needed encouragement and wisdom in the garden. CSU 1890 Land-Grant's own Business Officer Vicki Pettis serenaded the Garden group with "Wonderful" and "Today I Sing the Blues" by Aretha Franklin.

In addition to enjoying lively jazz tunes, participants also had the opportunity to plant herbs like cilantro in the garden, with the assistance of Kampman. Revelers at the Garden even received keepsakes in the form of seeds to take home to start their own garden.
