EXTENSION NOTES

Testing African American Heritage Crops in Ohio

Central State University Extension has been awarded $50,000 in SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant funding for 2024 to test the viability and sustainability of culturally specific African crops in Ohio climates and soil types. The crops, which include heritage greens, okra, southern peas, amaranth, waterleaf, peppers, eggplant, basil, and others, have specific tracings back to Africa and were brought to America by Africans hiding and carrying homeland seeds during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Read more.

"IN THE FARM/GARDEN/LAB"*

A visit to the CSU Aquaponics Greenhouse

*"In the Farm/Garden/Lab" is an occasional feature highlighting Extension and Research projects across CSU 1890 Land-Grant Program roughout Ohio.

Brian Kampman is a CSU Extension vegetable and small fruit crops technician, a position he took three years ago. In reality, however, Brian is a busy bee in the CSU 1890 Land-Grant ecosystem. You're likely to see him planting crops or pulling weeds in the Seed to Bloom Botanical and Community Garden, or grooming and watering elephant ear plants in front of Emery Hall. In mid-November last year, Cyril Ibe spotted Brian at the Aquaponics greenhouse off state Route 42, where he was planting two varieties of kale.

Cyril went back recently to see what became of Brian's kale in the greenhouse.
