The Central State University Extension's Discovery Day Camp 2024 welcomed 21 youngsters in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades to a week (July 8-12) of fun, hands-on learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math, and agriculture (STEM-Ag). Hosted by CSU Extension's 4-H team, this camp was held in Trotwood and gave the youth the opportunity to learn, make friends, have fun, and enjoy the great outdoors.

Watch out in this and other Land-Grant publications for more coverage of numerous other summer camps.

PEOPLE

Try this dish!

A group of youth learned how to hold their own in the kitchen and confidently present delicious and nutritious dishes for sharing during the CSU Upward Bound Academy, which concluded Tuesday, July 9. The program was two days a week for four weeks with 15 participants. With the instruction of 4-H and Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Extension educators, the program focused on healthy eating options, basic kitchen safety, setting financial goals, self-care and how to handle stress, as well as introduction to food production from 4-H with the tower garden.

The students had one day of learning the above-mentioned topics, and one day of a cooking lab. In the lab, the participants made smoothies, chicken quesadillas and homemade salsa, air fryer pizza bombs, and milkshakes. Pictured here are (l-r) Kylee Peoples, Southwest Extension FCS educator, Upward Bound Director John Anene, and Juliana Wickline, Southwest Extension FCS educator. Other participating CSU Extension staff in the Upward Bound program were James Keys, interim Program Extension Associate; Jodi Black, Southwest 4-H Extension educator; and Donna Kuykendall, Southwest EFNEP Educator.
