This month is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women’s (CSVANW) theme for this month is, “We Believe You.” Currently, the data shows that among American Indians and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) women and men, AI/AN women experience 56.1% of sexual violence and AI/AN men experience 27.5% of sexual violence (DOJ – NIJ, 2016). So for this year’s SAAM campaign we would like to make the commitment to believe survivors.
Our objectives for the month of April are as follows:
- To bring awareness to the issue of sexual assault
- To provide resources to advocates, survivors, and those supporting survivors
- To meet people where they’re at in their journey to understanding dynamics around sexual assault and prevention.
The call to action is to believe survivors. We invite you to work alongside us in preventing sexual assault by sharing and joining our trainings (Sexual Violence Against Native Women and In the Spirit of Healing and Justice: We Believe You), sharing our SAAM memes on social media, donate and support SA/SV organizations, and many more ways!

The first Tuesday of every April is the SAAM Day of Action. The Day of Action is an opportunity to start off the month with highly visible and coordinated actions.

Chances are someone in your life is a survivor of sexual harassment, assault, or abuse, even if they have never shared their story with you. Show your support for survivors of sexual harassment and abuse by wearing teal — the color of sexual violence prevention — TODAY and post a selfie on social media using #SAAM2021 and tagging CSVANW.
By wearing teal, you're signaling that you support survivors, and are a safe person to talk to if they need to reach out.

Sexual Violence in Tribal Communities

This training will provide basic information sexual violence in tribal communities. The target audience includes direct service providers, case managers, and advocates. The training will focus on the following areas:
- Basic understanding of sexual violence as a tool of oppression
- An overview of victim rights and laws, including federal and state laws
- Introduction to understanding cultural humility when working with Native survivors
- Explore strategies for improving response and coordination among tribal, state, and federal service agencies

Lunch and Learn: Native American Experiences with Gun Violence

CSVANW Training and Education Director Jolene Holgate joined a conversation with Brady United, a nonprofit that advocates against gun violence prevention, to talk about gun violence in New Mexico tribal communities. BU interns had an opportunity to learn about the roots of gun violence stemming from colonization, how gun violence intersects with domestic/sexual violence and MMIWR, and the important role of advocates assisting survivors. |

Advancing Advocacy Training in Tribal Community

CSVANW held its first Advancing Advocacy Training in Tribal Communities of 2021 this March. We were excited to provide another amazing 40-hour core advocacy session for advocates working with/in tribal communities. Advocates had the opportunity to engage with the trainers, training material, and led the discussion during two advocate workshops. The next advocate training for new advocates or advocates needing re-certification in the Four Corners area will be held in May. M3ore information to come! |

Diane Shije is a member from the Pueblo of Zia and a proud mother of three boys. I have been employed with Five Sandoval Indian Pueblos as a Prevention Specialist since 2016 and stationed in my own community.
I am very thankful to the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women and their assistance to become a certified Victim’s Advocate with their 40 hour training provided. I serve as the Pueblo of Zia Victim’s Advocate, I am able to assist domestic violence victims in court and other situations they may need support.
I am currently taking classes to advance my career in the behavioral health field in order to continue to assist my community. Along with my advocate training with CSVANW I have attended other trainings and I have worked with the coalition for over 3years now. Working closely with the Pueblo of Zia Tribal leaders and the Zia Health Task Force with their continued support in community events to further educate and spread awareness on domestic violence in hopes to end or reduce the numbers of violence in our community. I also work with youth to become more involved with the community and cover topics related to teen dating violence but due to the pandemic sessions have halted for the time being in hopes to start again in 2022.
Since the pandemic with the assistance of CSVANW I have provided PPE to clients and families. I enjoy the work I do and helping community members with the tools I have learned or resources that are available to assist them now or in the future.
