December 2022 Newsletter
As we begin to enter the dream world of winter evenings, ignite our fires, layer up, share winter stories, enjoy our favorite winter/holiday activities, and go inward, CSVANW wishes you all a safe, restful, and joyous winter solstice and holiday season.

Winter is a time for rest and reflection. 2022 was full of so many changes in our communities and we are embracing the calm of winter to honor all the movements that occurred this year to fully process and be present as we prepare for welcoming 2023.

We hired new staff, welcomed new members and our collective continues to grow, not just in size but in reach as we build nation-to-nation relationships and commit to our global solidarity for the liberation of all peoples oppressed and impacted by gendered violence.

We are grateful to every changemaker and cycle breaker offering their resources and gifts to community to show up for our relatives, to offer protection, solutions, and demanding accountability so we may collectively create and reclaim healthy thriving Native communities. As vital changemakers and valued members in the movement, we encourage you to spend time this winter season envisioning that future. Hold this vision in your mind, discuss it, journal about it, and create art inspired by it.

When we return from winter break we do so with our collective vision of a future our communities deserve and can work to build, strategize and organize our efforts to get there.

Take good care and rest, we will see you on the other end of hibernation.
CSVANW Policy & Advocacy Monthly Letter
Ma Gu Waam (Greetings),

December 5, 2022 our Policy & Advocacy Director represented the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women and the Bernalillo County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Multidisciplinary Team by providing verbal comments on Council Bill C/S 0-22-49 at the Albuquerque City Hall. This was in partnership with all the BCDVASMDT and a special thanks to Edna Sprague, Esq. with New Mexico Legal Aid, Inc. who worked on drafting the comments to present. The legislation passed unanimously! Our MDT made sure to include our Indigenous relatives and LGBTQIA as amendments to our comments. Also, thank you Isez J. Roybal, Coordinator of domestic violence & gender-based violence prevention for the City of Albuquerque for making us a part of the process.

Kher-kem/Hawuh,

Reproductive 101
November 2, 2022 - CSVANW and Bold Futures collaborated on providing Reproductive Justice 101 training and open discussion with our CSVANW Members, Board of Directors, and new staff. We feel it is important to understand where our members are at regarding their knowledge and receptivity on Reproductive health. Most importantly we wanted to hear what this means to them and their tribal communities.
Protect ICWA
November 9, 2022 - CSVANW attended, grateful to be in community with activists, tribal leaders, impacted youth, families, and so many more in front of the steps of the Supreme Court while oral arguments for the Brackeen v. Haaland case were being heard.

It was a historic and eventful day for not only our tribal communities back in New Mexico but for all of Indian Country.

We are glad to have protections for Native children in our communities regardless of the court's decision, through the Indian Family Protection Act, but we understand the gravity of this case for all.

We will continue our prayers and advocacy for our tribal communities whatever the decision.
NB3 Fun Run
November 13, 2022 - CSVANW Membership team supported the Notah Begay III (NB3) Foundation during their 5k/Fun Run this month! We were able to be out in the community to support our youth. Our CSVANW team was able to connect with relatives from different tribal communities & share our resources!

Kherkem- Ny’tra to NB3 for sharing space with us!

We are proud of all our advocates who completed the training, were engaged, and brought their own experiences forward. Our next 40-Hour Training will be taking place virtually in February 2023. Please look out for updates on registration in the new year.
Advancing Core Advocacy Training in Tribal Communities- PPE Distribution
November 15-17, 2022 - Our CSVANW Membership Coordinator Rufina supported our recent 40-hour training. They provide PPE support to our attendees by sharing resources such as COVID-19 tests, KN95/94 masks, hand wipes, etc. Rufina also made sure we were all breathing safe are during our 3-day event with our C02 reader & air purifications. We here at CSVANW believe community care is our tradition and this is how we are practicing that by providing PPE to the community.
Board Retreat
November 18 - 19, 2022 - After many years of not meeting in person, the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women is very excited to announce we hosted our Board of Directors Retreat in Albuquerque, NM.

On November 18th and 19th, while following Covid-19 safe practices, the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women Leadership and the CSVANW Board of Directors met for two days of critical thinking and strategic planning review. The Retreat was facilitated by Sarah Silva, Owner of Emergent Coaching & Facilitation. We have also held space to discuss engagement and communicate with SA survivors/victims. These continuing conversations are important in identifying challenges and expressing what works in our communities to help solve these challenging gaps and dead ends. These meetings are for Tribal and Non-Tribal Officials, Law Enforcement, Attorney, Court officials and staff, Advocates, etc., and will be scheduled this next year bi-monthly. Stay tuned on future meetings.
