2022 CCSMM Working Groups

In 2020 the Connecticut Coalition for Sustainable Materials Management (CCSMM) formed four working groups: Organics Recycling, Extended Producer Responsibility, Unit-Based Pricing and Increase Recycling. Each work group had two municipal officials co-chairing with support from DEEP staff. It's these working groups that unearthed the solutions and challenges municipalities face with managing recyclables and trash. The result was the CCSMM Menu of Options.

With the MIRA waste-to-energy facility scheduled to close this month, the Coalition is reconvening three working groups. Now is the time to join CCSMM and participate in one, two or all three working groups, to be part of creating solutions to CT's waste crisis.

Why Should Your Town Join CCSMM?

CCSMM members recognize that by working together, we have the potential to achieve economies of scale and send a strong signal for private investment and sector transformation. At the same time, DEEP respects the unique needs and policy preferences of each participating jurisdiction, and the importance of flexible approaches. Every municipality can contribute in different ways, through different measures, to address the disposal capacity challenges Connecticut cities and towns face. By joining CCSMM, municipalities are participating in strategies that will help achieve our shared goals.

We welcome all municipal partners that would like to join us in this endeavor.

On June 15th the full CCSMM coalition discussed new opportunities to work together in 2022 including: an update on key legislation and funding opportunities that resulted from the 2022 legislative session and the reconvening of CCSMM working groups.
