SMART Way to Reduce Trash, While Saving Money and the Environment

Connecticut has a major opportunity to reduce residential trash generation, all while saving money and benefiting the environment. “Save Money and Reduce Trash” (SMART) is a strategy that charges residents for waste disposal, based on the amount thrown away. In Connecticut, over 40 municipalities have been working to evaluate the benefits and feasibility of implementing a local SMART program.
Join the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Waste Zero and Sustainable CT for this informative workshop to learn how SMART works, hear from peer municipalities that have implemented SMART, how to calculate key metrics of your community’s waste generation, and how to earn points for your efforts in Sustainable CT under action

, we invite you to optional, small group break-out sessions for questions, answers and discussion. You will be able to select among the following break-outs:

The municipal experience of implementing SMART.

The Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) is now accepting applications for its 2020 Environmental Sustainability Leadership Award program. The award recognizes individuals or organizations for the impact they have made on an environmentally sustainable economy within the NERC 11-state region. Applications are due

USDA Community Compost and Food Waste Reduction (CCFWR) Pilot Projects
These cooperative agreements will support projects that develop and test strategies for planning and implementing municipal compost plans and food waste reduction plans. Cooperative agreements support projects led by local governments that: 1) generate compost; 2) increase access to compost for agricultural producers; 3) reduce reliance on, and limit the use of, fertilizer; 4) improve soil quality; 5) encourage waste management and permaculture business development; 6) increase rainwater absorption; 7) reduce municipal food waste; and 8) divert food waste from landfills. USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will provide assistance for conservation related activities.

ReFED COVID-19 Food Waste Solutions Fund
In response to the impacts of COVID-19 on our food system – especially the increase in wasted food that could have gone to the growing number of people facing food insecurity --
ReFED
launched this Fund to quickly get funds to those organizations that are able to rapidly scale their impact. The Fund has distributed its first $1 million of grants to organizations that will drive impact of more than a total of 10 million pounds of food waste prevented or 8.3 million meals rescued. Although the first round of applications and grant awards is now closed, ReFED welcomes additional submissions to be considered for future funding rounds and will review them on a rolling basis.

RecycleCT Foundation Publishes
Annual Report for 2019
The RecycleCT Foundation is pleased to share their 2019 annual report, which summarizes it’s activities in the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Created with the passing of Public Act 14-94, RecycleCT was formed to provide research and education activities and public information programs aimed at increasing the rate of recycling and reuse in the state.
The Annual Report 2019 highlights the continued efforts to make this non-profit organization more independent, including contracting with NERC to support the Foundation’s administrative responsibilities. This support has given the Board more time to focus on developing and implementing programs, including the start of Phase III of the
What’s IN, What’s OUT
recycling campaign, which focuses on promotion to the general public and tools and resources for municipalities, haulers, processors and other partners.
