Signalized Intersection Guidebook Workshop

A CT Traffic Signal Academy Workshop

This course provides an overview of the "Signalized Intersections: Informational Guide FHWA-HRT-04-091." The guide is a comprehensive document containing methods of evaluating the safety and operations of signalized intersections and tools to remedy deficiencies. It takes a holistic approach to signalized intersections and considers the safety and operational implications of a particular treatment on all system users, including motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users. Using the guide, participants learn to make insightful intersection assessments, understand trade-offs of potential improvement measures, and apply guidebook measures and best practices to reduce the incidence of intersection crashes.

Who Should Attend

State and municipal engineers, planners, public works directors and local traffic authorities.

Anyone involved in planning, designing and/or operating signalized intersections and those involved in remedying crash problems at signalized intersections, are encouraged to attend.

Participants will receive 6 credit hours towards their CT Traffic Signal Champion designation.

Course Instructor

Timothy C. Taylor , Senior Highway Safety Engineer. Tim joined Federal Highway Administration (Resource Center) 8 years ago after serving in various capacities with the Alabama Department of

Transportation (ALDOT). Those responsibilities included project engineer, district engineer, and traffic engineering. Tim now works on the Safety and Design Technical Service Team; he spends much of his time delivering training and workshops for states and local agencies: those include pedestrian safety and intersection countermeasures and analysis, signals and signing reviews, RSA’s and alternative intersection designs.

Learning Objectives

Upon Completion of this class, participants will be able to:

Recognize and apply fundamentals of signalized intersections in terms of user needs, geometric design, traffic design, and illumination.

Describe signalized intersection project process, safety, analysis methods, and operational analysis methods.

Describe the more than 100 signalized intersection treatments and their advantages and disadvantages.
