CFE Completes 7th ACCC Conductor Installation in Mexico

Commissión Federal de Electricidad CFE recently completed it's 7th ACCC® conductor installation by reconductoring an existing 26 kilometer double-circuit, double-bundled 400 kV line from Texcoco to La Paz, Mexico.

CFE selected 519.7 mm^2 (1026 kcmil) Drake size ACCC conductor manufactured locally by Viakon. Using 330 total kilometers of ACCC conductor, CFE was able to increase line capacity from 900 to 2200 amps without modifying or replacing existing structures in the densely populated area.

Project challenges included day to day outages of only 12 hours - so work had to be well planned and well executed. CTC Global's Master Installers Ismael Dones and Sergio Rojas spent time on the site to assist CFE's crews.

ANDE Completes 7th ACCC Conductor Installation in Paraguay

Earlier this month the Administracion Nacional de Electricidad ANDE Transmission Line Maintenance Crew replaced ACSR conductor with high-capacity, low-sag ACCC 219.9 mm^2 (434 kcmil) Copenhagen size conductor to increase the capacity of the existing 66kV San Migule-Puerto Botanico transmission line in Asuncion, Paraguay.

This was ANDE's 7th ACCC conductor installation.
CTC Global's Master Installer Bill Percy assisted the crew during the three week long project.

The finished ACCC conductor was provided by Lamifil. Hardware was provided by Preformed Line Products. The crew used a 60 inch diameter Tesmec bullwheel tensioner.

Asunción is one of the oldest cities in South America and the capital city of Paraguay, bordered by the Paraguay River.

OHIO Power Forward Grid Modernization Initiative

July 25th - 27th, David Townley, Director of Public Affairs, CTC Global attended the Phase 2 Exploring Technologies Workshop in Columbus, OH.  This workshop was part of the 3 Phase initiative of the Ohio Public Utility Commission to explore how customer demands and changing technologies might alter the conditions for the electric grid, modify utility actions, and cause a re-examination of how rates might be used to facilitate these changes.

Following the workshop, CTC Global submitted comments to the Ohio Power Forward initiative that informed the Commission and staff members about high performance transmission conductors such as ACCC and how these conductors are being used by utilities to get more capacity, efficiency, reliability, and resilience in the existing ROW with line-for-line reconductoring replacements on existing towers; saving time and money while improving the existing grid.

PJM Committee Receives ACCC Conductor Update

On August 16th, Dave Bryant, Director of Technology, and David Townley, Director of Public Affairs, CTC Global met with the PJM Transmission and Substation Subcommittee members near Valley Forge, PA to discuss grid challenges and how high performance transmission conductors such as ACCC are helping build a more robust and resilient power grid.

During the ninety minute discussion, CTC Global's Directors explored with the subcommittee members and PJM staff the current state of ACCC deployment as well as the installation experience and lessons learned with applications over the past decade.

Also discussed was the application by AEP and SCE of line-for-line reconductor replacements on existing structures in existing ROW in order to meet reliability requirements, gain capacity, reduce line losses, reduce emissions, free-up generation capacity, and improve resiliency of the existing grid.

CTC Global Updates ACCC Conductor Installation Manual

With nearly 500 ACCC conductor projects energized, the ACCC installation body of knowledge continues to grow. CTC Global captures and disseminates installation best practices in its Installation Guidelines Manual

Earlier this month, CTC Global released another revision and update to the ACCC Conductor Installation Guidelines, consisting of nine topical chapters.  The revised guidelines include expanded and new sections covering bundled conductor applications, mountainous terrain and large elevation changes, and sagging, along with a myriad of smaller updates such as keeping compression fittings straight, avoiding birdcage phenomena, and revisions to minimum sheave sizes.

New conductors designs and newly approved equipment, tools, and methods are included. If you have any questions or comments, please email: fieldservice@ctcglobal.com or visit www.ctcglobal.com

Free Engineering Software

CTC Global created CCP software to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized.

The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes. The program is fully functional and uses standard industry formulas (such as IEEE 738-2006). Outputs are readily comparable to Sag10®, PLS CADD™ and other similar programs.
