How to Improve the Efficiency, Capacity and Reliability of the Grid with ACCC Conductor

CTC Global books its 350th ACCC Conductor order

Milestone project represents over 30,000 km of ACCC installed in 30 countries.
 
Initially deployed in 2005, the ACCC conductor was developed to increase the capacity of existing transmission and distribution lines that were constrained due to thermal sag.
 
While the ACCC conductor's patented carbon and glass fiber core offers approximately twice the strength of steel, with a coefficient of thermal expansion about 1/10th that of steel to mitigate thermal sag, its lighter weight core also allows the incorporation of approximately 28% more aluminum without a weight or diameter penalty.
 
The ACCC conductor's added aluminum content (and excellent conductivity)* not only serves to increase capacity, it also allows the ACCC conductor to run much cooler than other conductor types under equal load. The cooler operating temperatures translate into line loss reductions of 25 to 40% or more.
 
Reduced line losses can reduce fuel consumption, conserve resources, and/or reduce emissions. With perhaps even greater significance, reduced line losses also frees-up generation capacity that is otherwise wasted. Considering the high cost and challenges associated with developing new generation resources, the ACCC offers progressive utilities a very favorable means of not only improving the efficiency, capacity and reliability of the grid, it also opens up a window to delivering more power to more customers with reduced generation investment.

*ACCC conductor uses Type 1350-0 (fully annealed) aluminum that offers 63% IACS conductivity. For comparison AAAC conductor (all aluminum alloy) uses Type 6201-T81 that offers 52.5 IACS conductivity.
 
MSETCL Completes ACCC Installation in Nagpur

With the help of Sterlite Technologies Ltd. and CTC Global, Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd. (MSETCL) successfully completed their second ACCC conductor installation in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. The 132 kV Ambazari - Hingna - Mankapur project utilized over 30 km of 622.6 kcmil (315.5 mm^2) Lisbon ACCC conductor manufactured by Sterlite Technologies, Ltd.
 
Nagpur, often called "Orange City" is precisely at the geographical centre of India and home of the zero mile marker. According to ABP News, Nagpur is the best Indian city to live in based on a number of indices. It is a major trade center for oranges cultivated in the region and also a key Information Technology center.
 
Hingna is an industrial area where load shedding previously occurred and Mankapur is a growing residential area that also suffered from power outages. The installation of ACCC conductor on this line mitigates the problem even when adjacent lines become overloaded - as the ACCC conductor can handle contingency loads without exhibiting excessive conductor sag.
 
Due to high population density, it was not possible to build a new line so ACCC was selected as the most cost-effective alternative. The project was successfully completed under the supervision of Sterlite's Field Installation Team and TEEMS India Tower Lines, an in-country ACCC installation supervisor specialist, exclusively appointed by CTC Global.

This project represents Sterlite's 11th successful ACCC conductor installation in India and their 7th ACCC installation completed so far this year.

AFL offers new HiTemp ® hardware system for ACCC

AFL recently completed the development, testing and commercialization of their patented HiTemp hardware system for ACCC Conductor.

AFL's HiTemp accessories are designed and engineered to operate 25-30 percent cooler than the conductor, improving heat dissipation. These accessories are fabricated from a specially tempered aluminum that transfers elevated current and dissipates increased heat more efficiently. The compression high tension fittings use a unique patented technology designed to hold at least 95 percent of the rated conductor breaking strength without compromising the integrity of the composite conductor core.
