ACCC Conductor installed on NEW triple bundle double circuit 275 kV line in Malaysia connecting new Generation to the grid

Earlier this month, with the help of EPC firm Trenergy Infrastructure, ACCC conductor stringing was completed and energized on a new transmission line in Johor - Baharu, Malaysia. The new line was built to connect a new power plant developed by Petronas. The project is a joint venture between Petronas and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

The 50 km double circuit line utilized lattice structures and steel monopoles. Triple bundled ACCC Dublin size conductor was selected for its high capacity and high efficiency for this project. The finished ACCC conductor was manufactured by Tenaga Cable Industries (TCI).

AEP Completes 11th ACCC Conductor Installation in the United States

With the support of Irby Construction, American Electric Power AEP successfully completed a 138 kV reconductoring project using ACCC Drake size conductor to increase the capacity of an existing transmission line without the need to replace or upgrade existing structures.

While transmission line upgrades historically required the use of larger / heavier conductors which required larger / stronger structures, the ability of the ACCC conductor of the same diameter and weight to double line capacity without violating clearance limitations offers substantial benefits in terms of reducing capital costs, minimizing environmental impact and streamlining the permitting process. Additionally, the ACCC conductor - due to its increased aluminum content - also serves to reduce line losses under any operating condition compared to conventional ACSR conductors.

While reconductoring projects have been commonplace for decades, as transmission structures are generally expected to last 80 years while overhead conductors are generally expected to last for 40 years, in the past, these projects simply replaced "like for like" wire, with little to no performance gains. Today, with the advent of high-performance conductors such as ACCC, reconductoring takes on a whole new meaning, while offering several additional benefits which include resistance to cyclic load fatigue and corrosion.

ACCC conductor for the 17 circuit mile Victoria to Fannin AEP project was provided by General Cable and the hardware was provided by Burndy. This was AEP's 11th ACCC installation, with their 12th ACCC project slated to begin before year's end.

Brookfield Renewable Selects ACCC Conductor for Recently Completed Project in Tennessee

Earlier this month Brookfield Renewable completed a line upgrade using ACCC conductor to increase capacity. The project included mountain top spans of up to 5,278 feet. Two 161 kV circuits were upgraded with ACCC conductor. ACCC was also used for the two static lines. Service Electric Company completed the challenging project with the support of CTC Global's Master Installer, David Pearce.

Brookfield Renewable's portfolio includes more than 250 renewable power facilities in North America, Latin America and Europe with a combined installed capacity exceeding 10,000 megawatts. Service Electric Company was incorporated in Tennessee in 1945 as an Industrial-commercial electrical contractor specializing in the construction of electrical transmission and distribution systems, power substations, and switchyards. General Cable provided the Curlew size ACCC conductor and Burndy provided hardware.

CTC Global Updates ACCC Conductor Installation Manual

With nearly 500 ACCC conductor projects energized, the ACCC installation body of knowledge continues to grow. CTC Global captures and disseminates installation best practices in its Installation Guidelines Manual

Earlier this month, CTC Global released another revision and update to the ACCC Conductor Installation Guidelines, consisting of nine topical chapters.  The revised guidelines include expanded and new sections covering bundled conductor applications, mountainous terrain and large elevation changes, and sagging, along with a myriad of smaller updates such as keeping compression fittings straight, avoiding birdcage phenomena, and revisions to minimum sheave sizes.

New conductors designs and newly approved equipment, tools, and methods are included. If you have any questions or comments, please email: [email protected] or visit www.ctcglobal.com

CTC Global's ACCC® Conductor Becomes the First Conductor in History to Receive 3rd Party Certification for Energy Efficiency and CO2 Emission Reductions

CTC Global ACCC conductor is the first electric transmission conductor in history to earn SCS certification for CO2 emission reductions resulting from improved energy efficiency.  SCS Global Services (SCS) verified that ACCC conductor reduces CO2 emissions associated with transmission line losses by 27 to 31 percent under certain design conditions compared to conventional steel reinforced ACSR conductors, the 100-year old technology currently used in most electric transmission and distribution power lines.

Tobias Schultz, Manager of Corporate Sustainability Services at SCS stated: "SCS Global's Certification of ACCC conductor creates significant new opportunities for corporate and governmental entities seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for regulatory or voluntary purposes. Certification allows transmission owning electric utilities and developers to evaluate and quantify CO 2 emission reductions associated with using ACCC conductor in place of less efficient ASCR conductor, and to explore pathways for monetizing those reductions or using them to meet regulatory obligations."

SCS is a trusted and neutral global leader with more than three decades of experience in third-party environmental, sustainability and certification, auditing, testing and standards development. SCS also certified  Conductor Comparison Program tool as a valid way to estimate reductions in line losses and associated CO2 emissions achieved by installing ACCC conductor in lieu of traditional ACSR conductor. Both SCS certifications were conducted in accordance with ISO 14044:2006 standard for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a methodology used for evaluating the environmental performance of various products.

SCS Global's Certification Assessment of the ACCC conductor considered a range of conductor sizes, line lengths and voltages representing a number of project types in countries such as the U.S., Indonesia, Germany, India and Chile that have varied grid mixes and associated emission factors.

Low Sag and High Efficiency is a Winning Combination

As transmission designers, we are faced with numerous challenges and opportunities. Selecting the best conductor for the job is not always easy. However, the benefits of low-sag and high-efficiency offer a winning combination.

Looking at the comparison chart below based on lab testing performed by Ontario Hydro at Kinectrics Lab, you can not only see the difference in thermal sag between the conductors tested, you can also see how much cooler the ACCC conductor operated under the 1,600 amp test load. 60 to 80 degrees cooler reflects a huge improvement in efficiency.
Improved efficiency translates into higher emergency capacity, reduced line losses, reduced fuel consumption, and in some cases, reduced GHG emissions. Additionally, generation capacity that is otherwise wasted supporting line losses is now freed-up to deliver.
