CTC Global's Matthew Hutchison Presents ACCC Conductor Advantages at the National Electric Transmission Infrastructure Summit in Washington, D.C.

Americans for a Clean Energy Grid hosted the 1st annual National Electric Transmission Infrastructure Summit in Washington, D.C., February 9 - 10 to discuss the need to build out, modernize, and integrate America's high-voltage transmission network.
 
Sponsors included: ITC Holdings, National Grid, American Electric Power, the American Wind Energy Association, and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. More than 100 senior representatives of utilities, transmission developers, equipment manufacturers, policy makers, labor unions, and environmental advocacy organizations participated.
 
There was broad agreement on the economic, environmental and national security benefits of transmission investments, and that steps to accelerate projects should be part of any forthcoming infrastructure package. Participants also expressed strong interest in learning more about the benefits of advanced transmission technologies, including: high performance transmission conductors (e.g. CTC Global's ACCC®), power flow controls, dynamic line rating, non-touch monitoring, topology analytics, and compact tower designs.

CTC Global Welcomes Dignitaries from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh

Earlier this month the Managing Director and Chief Engineer from PGCB met with CTC Global's team to review upcoming ACCC conductor installations in Bangladesh.

Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd. (PGCB) was formed under the restructuring process of Power Sector in Bangladesh with the objective of bringing about commercial environment including increase in efficiency, establishment of accountability and dynamism in accomplishing its objectives.

PGCB was incorporated in November 1996 with an authorized capital of Tk.10 billion. It was entrusted with the responsibility to own the national power grid to operate and expand the same with efficiency. Pursuant to Government decision to transfer transmission assets to PGCB from Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA), PGCB completed taking over of all the transmission assets in December, 2002.

CTC Global and General Cable Expand Collaborative ACCC Conductor Partnership

CTC Global and General Cable announced the signing of an agreement which implements an expanded ACCC® licensing arrangement. Under this new agreement, General Cable has been granted the rights to manufacture, promote and sell high-capacity, low-loss ACCC bare overhead transmission and distribution conductor in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

This agreement combines the unique strengths of both companies - General Cable's century long experience supporting the utility market with technologically advanced product, and CTC Global's patented ACCC conductor utilizing proprietary carbon fiber core technology - to deliver proven cost-effective electric grid efficiency solutions to utility customers. ACCC Conductor Attributes Discussed at NASEO Conference in Washington DC

On Thursday, February 9th, David Townley, Director of Public Affairs at CTC Global, presented the ACCC high-efficiency, high-capacity value proposition at a panel entitled "Supply and Demand Efficiency through a Systems Approach" at the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) 2017 Energy Policy Outlook Conference in Washington DC. 
 
The panel explored how policy makers can understand and advance efficiency across various energy systems - from individual buildings, to communities, and to the electric grid at large.
CTC Global's ACCC® Conductor Becomes the First Conductor in History to Receive 3rd Party Certification for Energy Efficiency and CO2 Emission Reductions

CTC Global ACCC conductor is the first electric transmission conductor in history to earn SCS certification for CO2 emission reductions resulting from improved energy efficiency.  SCS Global Services (SCS) verified that ACCC conductor reduces CO2 emissions associated with transmission line losses by 27 to 31 percent under certain design conditions compared to conventional steel reinforced ACSR conductors, the 100-year old technology currently used in most electric transmission and distribution power lines.
  
Tobias Schultz, Manager of Corporate Sustainability Services at SCS stated: "SCS Global's Certification of ACCC conductor creates significant new opportunities for corporate and governmental entities seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for regulatory or voluntary purposes. Certification allows transmission owning electric utilities and developers to evaluate and quantify CO 2 emission reductions associated with using ACCC conductor in place of less efficient ASCR conductor, and to explore pathways for monetizing those reductions or using them to meet regulatory obligations."
  
SCS is a trusted and neutral global leader with more than three decades of experience in third-party environmental, sustainability and certification, auditing, testing and standards development. SCS also certified  Conductor Comparison Program tool as a valid way to estimate reductions in line losses and associated CO2 emissions achieved by installing ACCC conductor in lieu of traditional ACSR conductor. Both SCS certifications were conducted in accordance with ISO 14044:2006 standard for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a methodology used for evaluating the environmental performance of various products.

SCS Global's Certification Assessment of the ACCC conductor considered a range of conductor sizes, line lengths and voltages representing a number of project types in countries such as the U.S., Indonesia, Germany, India and Chile that have varied grid mixes and associated emission factors.

The California Energy Commission in association with other state agencies and stakeholders is working to find solutions to help the state access more renewable sources of energy. Clarification of Our Previous Announcement Published on January 30th, 2017 Regarding the Thermo-Mechanical Test of ACCC Conductor and Hardware

As was mentioned in our January Newsletter, EPRI completed the 1,500 thermo-mechanical cycle test on CTC Global's ACCC conductor along with Burndy and AFL dead-ends and splices. The test protocol, designed to represent 30+ years of service, was completed at 180 degrees C. Each cycle lasted for approximately 5 hours.  EPRI conducted this test as a contractor at CTC's request. EPRI is a non-profit organization and does not endorse nor promote any product.
 
The test was conducted with revised thermocouple attachments and a slightly modified connector pressing process for the Burndy Connectors compared to the previous tests conducted. In this case, no detectable physical difference between the conductor and connectors from the beginning to the end of the test was observed. There was neither loosening of the conductor aluminum strands, nor slipping of the conductor in the connectors during months of testing.
 
Upon completion of the 1,500 cycles the connectors and conductor were shipped back to CTC Global where each component was subsequently pulled to failure on CTC Global's load frame while witnessed by EPRI staff. All of the conductor, splices and dead-ends pulled to over 100% of their 41,000 pound rated strength.

CTC Global created CCP software to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized.
 
The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes. The program is fully functional and uses standard industry formulas (such as IEEE 738-2006). Outputs are readily comparable to Sag10®, PLS CADD™ and other similar programs.
