Expanding Middle Level CTE One Family at a Time

The NYSACTE fellowship program is designed to provide an opportunity for participants to improve their leadership skills while learning more about career and technical education in NYS. Throughout this process participants research and solve a problem directly aligned to the development and success of the industry.

NYSACTE Fellow Cynthia Thomas utilized her research to create useful tools aimed at engaging and educating families on the benefits of middle level CTE. Cynthia is the founder of CTE Consultants and a professor at SUNY Oswego. Prior to entering post-secondary education, she spent her career educating and engaging secondary CTE families and students. Cynthia’s time in the field helped her see gaps that exist within middle level CTE, and how these gaps directly impact CTE opportunities for students. Through research, Cynthia identified family engagement as the foundational focus to close these gaps. This led her to develop various engagement strategies and promotional materials aimed at bringing industry to the middle level.

NY CTE Month Resource 2023

The resources created will aid in school districts creating engaging informational resources to educate families on middle level CTE and its many benefits. The family engagement strategies were created for middle level CTE programs to create enriching experiences for students and families both in and out of the school day. The social media calendar was created for middle level programs to showcase consistent CTE content on various social media platforms. The CTE promotional video is a digital ad designed to provide an overview of middle level CTE. This video is great for school counselors and recruitment events as well as social media. These resources are a great addition to any middle level CTE program looking to engage families on how middle level CTE is the foundation for college and career success. Download the PDF and click the links for each resource to access.
