VCOE Career Education

CDE - State

CTE Collaborative, Thursday, August 25, 10:30 am This monthly session is an opportunity for site and district leaders to share and learn about the elements of high quality CTE programs. This year will move from collaboration toward collective impact to build our regional workforce.

Career Education Center, Counselor Connection, September 15: This fall event will be held September 15 at 3:30 pm. This quarterly virtual meeting is designed to share important information with high school counselors about the CEC program. Contact Nicole Valentine at nvalentine@vcoe.org to be added to the CEC Counselor contact list.

K16 Collaborative, Central Coast Region, Planning Activities: Attention Superintendents and district leaders! Ventura County is part of the Central Coast CERF Region, with Santa Barbara, SLO, San Benito, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. A regional team has been meeting in preparation for submitting a planning grant application. Click here to learn about the regional effort, coordinated by WestEd. K12 SWP Round 5: The RFA is scheduled to be released by the end of August. The tentative due date is October 14. K12 Pathway Coordinator Anthony Marenco is here to serve districts and may be reached at amarenco@vcoe.org.

Program Spotlight: Healthcare - Resources for Teachers

New course Patient Care I is available in a Canvas shell. Districts may access this through the Canvas Commons, under CTE Ventura County Collaborative. Patient Care I is designed to be the first year course in a two year pathway sequence, replacing Medical Terminology for many district programs. This course was developed by teachers in OUHSD with input from industry and community college partners. A Patient Care II course is being developed and piloted this current year.

Transportation for English Learners to Community College Healthcare Programs is available for VCOE K12 SWP partners for Round 2 funding through October 31. VCOE will reimburse districts for the cost of busses with arrangements made in advance. Contact Erica Perez at eperez@vcoe.org no later than September 15 to arrange for funding.

Short videos on community college healthcare programs. These are designed for high school students exploring careers in healthcare. Our Career Education Center offers opportunities for grade 11 and 12 and serve as a springboard to our community college programs. Access in the shared google folder, link below.

Access to mental health education modules. Free Online Suicide Prevention Training is available for California Middle and High schools. Resources introduce students to careers in mental health. Healthcare teachers are invited to embed this suicide awareness content into pathway curriculum.

This 90 minute asynchronous training is available free for students. Students earn a certificate when they finish, which may be turned in to the teacher.

Industry Spotlight: Universal Pre-Kindergarten

The California P3 Preschool to Grade 3 state initiative including Universal Pre-Kindergarten is creating increased demand for a workforce trained in child development and early childhood education (ECE). Career opportunities range from entry level jobs requiring 6-12 college units and earning $15/hour, to Bachelor's Degrees which more often pay living wages.

High school students are poised to move into careers in the preschool setting. High school students may want to consider participating in college level courses in the senior year, earning the 6-12 ECE units they need to work in the field. This invaluable experience working with children while concurrently pursuing a BA degree supports the identification of areas students want to pursue in the field of education. All three of our community colleges offer programs in child development/early childhood education, and the School of Education at CSU Channel Islands has a state-renowned program for the Bachelor Degree required for Transitional Kindergarten. VCOE Career Education is scheduling fall tours of community college programs for site and district CTE leads and will send out dates in the coming weeks. VCOE is tracking local initiatives and will continue to provide information on career opportunities for high school students.
