Program Spotlight: Santa Paula High School Choir to Carnegie Hall
|
|
Seventeen students from the Santa Paula High School Concert Choir will perform at the most prestigious concert stage in the world: Carnegie Hall in New York City. The SPHS Concert Choir has been invited by Dr. KuanFen Liu, Director of the California State University Channel Island Concert Choir, to perform along with her University Choir and the New England Symphonic Orchestra on June 26, 2022.
The SPHS Choir began as a club in 2015 with just eight students, and under the leadership of Jerry Cruz, Choral Director and Assistant Director of Music for SPHS, the choir has grown and now is awarded multiple trophies per year.
The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity speaks to students' talent and dedication, but students acknowledge this is more than any single performance. Student Samantha Reader who aspires to be a teacher, shares, "I have a passion for music, and it makes me feel good to be around other people who share that same passion." Student Jesus Parilla, who recently applied to colleges in New York, adds, "I have never traveled much outside of California, so this is a great opportunity to travel to New York." For students at SPHS, the choir is their second home and a pathway to future success.
SPHS is currently fundraising the remainder of the approximately $40,000.00 for expenses. They now accept donations through Our SPHS Choir Club ASB account. You can click on the links to find the Donation Letter Request and ASB Donation Form. You can also email Jerry Cruz at jcruz@santapaulausd.org for more information about donations and supporting this incredible opportunity for students.

College Spotlight: Career Education Day @ Moorpark College, March 10
|
|
The day will begin with a keynote address followed by two consecutive demo sessions of 45 minutes each, where students will be able to pick from a total of 18 different demos! The event will conclude with remarks from Moorpark College's executive leadership.
Having students attend a virtual event presents its own set of challenges, especially when school schedules and class periods don’t align perfectly with the event schedule. Similarly, we understand that many attendees will not be able to attend the entire event. With these things in mind, here are some suggestions for helping students tune in:
-
Teachers project demo to the class during the class period: In instances where demo subjects match classes at your school, consider having teachers register for the event so they can project it onto a screen for all to see.
-
Create a space on campus to host virtual participation: Designate a place where students can go to login and attend Career Ed Day, such a computer lab or a similar space where laptops could be set up.
