COVID Safety & CTE: Items used in classrooms that make contact with a student's skin must be thoroughly cleaned or disinfected if shared among students. Items that touch the body, arms, or hands should be cleaned. Items that touch the head or face should be disinfected using a product approved for use against COVID-19 on the US EPA approved list “N.” Ideally, items should be assigned to students for individual use. In CTE classrooms, previously shared items include safety glasses, welding jackets, and stethoscopes. As schools prepare to reopen, considerations include how many items may need to be purchased to provide for each individual student and how these items will be stored. Safety glasses might be stored in ziploc baggies with students' names written on them. Care should be given regarding how the baggies are then stored; items should be stored in individual spaces. This message has been developed in conjunction with the VCSSFA. Work with your district's Risk Management Department for all CTE program safety needs.

Program Spotlight: Career Education Center, Dental & Nursing
The Dental Assistant (DA) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) programs at the Career Education Center (CEC) offer tremendous rigor and value for students to start their careers in patient care pathways. By completing the DA program students earn a radiation safety certification, CPR certification, and receive a ten month credit toward the fifteen month state requirement to apply for dental assistant licensure through the Dental Board of California. The CNA program provides Basic Life Support certification, CPR certification, and eligibility to take the California Nurse Assistant Competency Exam. Industry demand is high for skilled healthcare workers.
Registration is now open for 2021-2022 classes. Information is at this link. Students ready to make the commitment put themselves in a position to gain immediate employment in the healthcare industry. In addition, students will be in prime position to advance their careers in healthcare through pathways at the community college and/or university levels after high school. Teachers for these classes, Tacha Robles for DA and Camile Jauregui for CNA, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience plus a love for students and teaching. Both teachers expressed their drive and joy in seeing students progress through their programs and move on to working in the field and gaining more certifications. Students in each program have persevered through the challenges associated with distance learning and are close to being ready for employment. Optimism is high that instruction will return in person in the fall. Students' determination, resiliency, and positive attitudes net excellent results. Specific program questions may be directed to TRobles@vcoe.org or cjauregui@vcoe.org.

Industry Spotlight: Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation
Due to COVID, the Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation industry has had a year of turmoil. With many service industry employees out of work and establishments closing their doors, one may wonder if the restaurant/hospitality industry is still a viable career pathway for a young adult. Chef Adam Hart, lead faculty of the Culinary Arts and Hospitality program at Oxnard College (OC) says we can expect the industry to make a big comeback overall, and in Ventura County in particular. Chef Adam noted the strong, resilient nature of culinary students and employees in the industry in general. Many of the students in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality program at OC have remained employed at some level in the industry and continued their studies at OC. Before COVID, calls for employees were constant. As COVID restrictions ease, the industry is preparing for a major boom and return to prominence.
Moorpark College Hospitality Management is also poised to help students prepare for the anticipated boom in hospitality over the coming years. Program Lead Christy Douglass echoes the resilience of the hospitality students and the industry. Moorpark is gearing up for the rebound by preparing two new courses, Introduction to Event Management and Hospitality Supervision and Guest Relations, which will be offered in the 2021-2022 academic year.
