Summer 2019 Workshops

Legendary Projects: Model Boats for STEM  June 3-6, 2019 Normal, IL

In this 4-day workshop, we will be designing and building radio controlled model race boats powered by weed trimmer motors. Through this process, we will learn how specific math and science concepts can be addressed. The total cost of the workshop will be covered by the Innovative CTE Curriculum Project but a $120 registration fee is required to cover expenses not allowed by the grant funding. Each participant will be builidng their own boat, complete with engine and radio system. You will also receive a textbook on boat design that contains the mathematical formulas necessary for proper engineering. The workshop is scheduled for 8:00 to 3:00 each day in the Ropp Agriculture Building at Illinois State University. 26 CPDUs are offered. Snacks and lunch are provided. Space is limited . Go to  Legendary Projects Race Boat Registration  to register for the workshop. Contact Brad Christensen at  bachris@ilstu.edu  for more information.

Mathematics in CTE   June 26-27, 2019 Normal, IL

This is a 2-day workshop to help you strengthen instruction in your discipline by incorporating appropriate mathematics. Mathematics is a tool, just like another other in our labs. The only difference is that most students cannot use these tools and we seldom teach them how. After all, students have already had 10+ years of math instruction before coming in our door, we are not math teachers and don’t want to become one, and there is no time in our schedule for it anyway. Consider the following facts: All teachers have had to adjust instruction because the students cannot “do the math." Nearly 75% of all teens dropping out of high school cite Algebra as the reason. and 60-80% of community college students nationwide test into remedial math and most don’t pass it. Remedial classes greatly reduce the chances of graduation. In this workshop, we will experience several lessons that address specific CTE content and the related mathematics. You will also find ways to enhance instruction and understanding in your discipline by including math. We plan to meet from 8:30 to 3:00 each day, offering 12 CDPUs. There is a $60 registration fee. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Go to   Math in CTE Registration Link  to register for the workshop.   Contact Brad Christensen at  bachris@ilstu.edu  for more information.
