“Doomscrolling” is a term which some psychologists use to describe the activity of immersing oneself in the overwhelming number of  negative stories,  social media posts, emotional arguments  and opinionated rants which are at your fingertips 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Though he had no concept of such a media onslaught, the writer of Psalm 1 did understand the impact of paying attention to voices which were not from God.  He also understood the blessing of listening to the truth which comes from God’s Word.

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
     or stand around with sinners,
     or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
     bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.
But not the wicked!
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.
They will be condemned at the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.
For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.

With a similar message, Jesus said:  “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.  And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. “  (John 8:31-32)

As you meditate on these words here are some prompts you might use for prayer.
·         Lord, please show me how I ‘follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.’
·         Lord, what do you want me to know about delighting in your word (law)?
·         Lord, based on these words, how do you want me to be more like Christ today?
