SKILL LEVELS:

Beginner Level:

Entry level, does not require any prior training although it is better if you have taken our beginner quilting class to learn the basics.  Classes at this level are designed to give those who have had training in the basics more practice and review of these skills. This level requires no previous experience in technique, but does require basic knowledge of machine or computer for computer-related classes such as machine embroidery classes

Advanced Beginner:

A beginner level project but participants must be at the point where they are comfortable in the use of the rotary cutter and of their sewing accuracy. Participants may be asked to do the cutting prior to class and will likely have to complete part of the quilt outside class time. This class may introduce a technique that is beyond the basic quilting techniques but still at the beginner level. This level assumes a full understanding of sewing or embroidery machines with some basic experience in quilting or garment construction. For computer classes at this level some digitizing experience and basic knowledge of computer terms is helpful.

Advanced:

Requires that the participants be proficient at the basic quilting skills (i.e. use of rotary cutter, straight & accurate seams, pressing without stretching, understand common quilting terms and know how to assemble common blocks such as half square triangle, pinwheel, flying geese). This class may introduce a technique that is beyond the basic quilting techniques and beyond beginner level. This level is for those looking to further and refine their technique. A full understanding of garment construction, quilting and sewing terms is assumed. For software classes, this level would also include knowing basic software and digitizing terms.

PILLOWCASE AND QUILT DONATIONS
We were contacted recently the neonatal ward at Iowa City Hospital with a request for someone to make the special weighted mittens they use to position the tiny babies in their ward.  They would like to send them home with the new moms to use but the cost of purchasing them was too great to allow them to do this.  We have taken this on as one of our ongoing projects. If you would like to see one of the finished mittens stop in at the shop.  When you finish the mittens you can just drop them at the shop and we will get them delivered to Iowa City.

If you are interested in making some of these mittens you can download the pattern and instructions here.  Thanks for your help!

Don't forget, Crazy To Quilt is the drop off point for donations to Miles of Pillowcase Smiles, Project Linus, Quilts of Valor and Cedar Valley Hospice.  We also take fabric donations for Keepsake Quilt Guild and local church quilt groups.  If you are donating several boxes of fabric please call first and let us arrange for someone to be at the shop to pick it up when you drop it off.  We don't have the space to store boxes of fabric donations but the donations are greatly appreciated by the guild and churches.

Looking for a Special Pattern or Particular Tool?
Question MarkHave you been searching the shops for just the right pattern to make for your new grand-baby?  Is there a tool you want but can't find it anywhere locally?  Check out our distributors' web sites.  If you find what you want, we can often get it for you in less than two weeks and without any charge for postage if you pick it up.

We order from Checker Distributors, United Notions, and Brewers and they all have huge selections of patterns and tools you can browse.  Just write down the product name and number and bring it to the shop.

. . . for using a walking foot

The walking foot, or even feed foot, is designed to provide uniform feeding of multiple layers of fabric by providing an upper set of feed dogs that match the movement of the lower feed dogs.

It is important that you have the correct walking foot for your make and model of machine because the construction varies between machines. Generally, a walking foot has a lever that hooks around the needle clamp. The lever moves up and down with the needle.  The motion of the needle controls the movement of the upper feed dogs.

Machine Foot On the PFAFF sewing machine, the even feed system is built-in. It is called the IDT (integrated dual feed) and is located directly behind the presser foot ankle.

To engage the IDT, simply lower and snap it in place behind the presser foot.  The built-in even feed system is smaller and easier to engage than the separate walking foot.  Since it is built into the machine it is completely synchronized with the lower feed dogs.

A walking foot, or IDT, is essential for straight line machine quilting.  Many quilters use it when they are piecing and as well when attaching the binding because it keeps the fabric layers moving through the machine with little or no pinning required.
