Happy Fall,

I am excited to announce the launch of our Annual Pilot Program RFA. This initiative aims to foster innovative clinical and translational research that addresses pressing questions and lays the groundwork for future NIH and externally-funded proposals. We encourage interdisciplinary collaborations across our CTSC partners to enrich our research landscape and develop new avenues of inquiry.

In addition to calling out innovative translational projects, we are also focused on advancing equity in Northern Ohio, and we invite projects that engage community partners to create meaningful impact. Up to eight grants of $50,000 each will be awarded to projects that demonstrate high methodological quality and feasibility within a 12-month timeframe.

Below, you will find details about the Annual Pilot Award Program. Additionally, a recording of our technical webinar is available for on-demand viewing on our website. In this webinar, we highlight the differences between Translational Research and Translational Science projects, and we review the full program RFA.

I encourage you to submit your proposals and collaborate with colleagues across disciplines. Together, we can drive forward research that makes a real difference in Northern Ohio and beyond.

Be sure to check special events and workshops below. Please participate and get to know the CTSC of Northern Ohio team, your partner institutions, and community!

The CTSC Annual Pilot Award Program Seeks Letter of Intent for One-Year Projects; LOIs due November 15, 2024 at 11:59PM via InfoReady.

The goals of the 2025 CTSC Annual Pilot Program are:

  • To foster innovative new clinical and translational research that supports research development to address urgent questions or to develop preliminary data that can provide initial support to establish proof of concept and be used to launch new NIH or other externally-funded research proposals;
  • To encourage interdisciplinary teams of investigators that span across CTSC partners to stimulate investigators from other areas to lend their expertise in research in clinical and translational science while developing collaborations or new research avenues;
  • To support research collaborations with community partners and organizations; and
  • To advance health equity in Northern Ohio through research

Both Translational Research and Translational Science Projects are eligible.

Up to (8) grants, will be awarded with budgets up to $50,000 each in direct costs. All research activities must be completed by June 30, 2026.

The call for letters of intent and full 2025 RFA is available on the CTSC website.

From Research to Real Life Podcast

Episode 3 | Funding for Novel Research and Collaboration

In this episode our host, Sue Marasco sits down with Umut Gurkan PhD, Wilbert J. Austin Professor of Engineering, Case School of Engineering and CTSC of Northern Ohio Annual Pilot Module Lead to discuss funding opportunities and the power of collaboration which has helped advance his research and international clinical studies on sickle cell disease.

Umut tells us stories about his research journey and emphasizes the importance of team building, identifying project roadblocks, and accessing resources to enhance the competitiveness of proposals for larger NIH grants and potential commercialization.

Meet the CTSC Team |

Jeri Jewett-Tennant, MPH, MCHES,

Assistant Director, Research Concierge Services

Jeri Jewett-Tennant serves as the Assistant Director for Research Navigation Services at the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative of Northern Ohio. There, she channels her deep passion for public health into advancing research efforts that prevent illness and save lives. Drawing on extensive experience as a public health professional in Northeast Ohio, Jeri has championed the needs of underserved populations through community-based and public health research.

She joined the CTSC in January 2024, having previously worked for CWRU several years ago at the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods where she connected local health organizations with university researchers to take on impactful projects.

Most recently a program officer for the CDC Foundation, Jeri led 33 community health organizations working toward achieving vaccine equity for underserved communities. She has also worked locally in collaborative public health partnerships that united local community groups, hospitals, public health agencies, and nonprofit organizations. These partnerships tackled critical issues such as opioid misuse prevention, health disparities, and more inclusive collaborations between healthcare, academia, and nonprofits.

“My career hasn’t always been a straight line. I started with a journalism degree, but after working at a shelter for unhoused women and children, and seeing what upstream preventative solutions could do, that was it for me. My trajectory completely changed and I pursued my master’s degree in public health,” she noted.

Jeri is also a Master’s Certified Health Education Specialist who has spearheaded several impactful leadership initiatives in her field. Beyond her professional achievements, she embraces her role as a wife and a mom to two children—one in high school and the other in college.

Fun Fact: In her free time, Jeri fosters animals from the APL and has recently had her first 'foster fail' with a kitten named Cricket.

The Advanced Translational Leadership in Academic Science (ATLAS) Program is Now Accepting Nominations for the 2025 Cohort

Last year, the inaugural ATLAS program aimed at enhancing leadership in team science for mid- or upper level established investigators. This year, the focus will be on early investigators (Assistant Professor) in clinical and translational research. The goal is that investigators will be equipped with skills to become leaders in team science, and also form new collaborations across the partnering institutions. ATLAS is a 7-month long training program focused on leadership in team science and will start in March of 2025. The program will consist of four 2-day sessions (March, May, July, September). The focus of the sessions will incorporate a team project, assessments, leadership skills and various team workshops.

Please send your nominations to atlas-ctsc@case.edu, including both name and email by October 11, 2024. Self-nominations will also be accepted. Individuals chosen for the program will then receive an email with a REDCap application.

Participating institutions include Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System, MetroHealth, Northeast Ohio Medical University, University Hospitals, and University of Toledo.

Congratulations to the winning ATLAS Team 2: Educate to Achieve (E2A) Program!

The Advanced Translational Leadership in Academic Science (ATLAS) Program has completed its inaugural year.

As part of this program, four teams were presented with a challenge in translational science and asked to develop a potential solution through the implementation of a program. The winning team would then be funded by a CTSC pilot award to initiate this proposed program.

Team 2 was presented with the challenge: How do we enhance education of translational science, while also incorporating the principles of translational science into research?

They developed the Educate to Achieve (E2A) Program, which is training to achieve optimal health through translational science. This program will utilize the Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) platform to develop and host the training module.

Congratulations to Team 2, we look forward to seeing the results of this study!

Team 2 included:

Mohamad Chaaban, MD (Cleveland Clinic)

Darcy Freedman, MD, MPH (Case Western Reserve University)

Adonis Hijaz, MD (University Hospitals)

Ann Pearman, PhD (MetroHealth)

Elie Saade, MD, MPH (University Hospitals)

Advisor: Michael Konstan, MD (Case Western Reserve University)

Congratulations to our entire 2024 ATLAS Cohort! Thank you for dedicating your time and energy to this transformative program. Your commitment to developing leadership skills in team science and fostering collaboration across our partner institutions is invaluable to advancing clinical and translational research. We look forward to witnessing the incredible impact you will make as leaders!
