Dear Colleagues,

As we have wrapped up Year 3, we would like to start by thanking you for your continued collaboration and support of the CTSC Workforce Development efforts. We are excited to continue sharing with you all the programs, news, and updates that we are planning for Year 4. 

As we transition into our next year, we want to take a moment to introduce our new Co-Lead for our Workforce Development efforts, Jacob Kurowski, MD. Dr. Kurowski is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist at the Cleveland Clinic, with a robust clinical research background. We are excited for him to join the team!

2026 Clinical Research Summer Observation Program

This summer, the CTSC Workforce Development team hosted its third annual Clinical Research Summer Observation Program where students participated in a week-long immersive experience designed to introduce students to the many career pathways available in clinical research. The program combined hands-on observation with interactive educational sessions, giving participants a unique opportunity to explore the daily work of research professionals.

With the support of research professionals at the partnering institutions, the students participated in three days of shadowing clinical research professionals and two days of classroom-based learning sessions featuring guest speakers from across the clinical research enterprise. 

A total of 18 students, comprised of 11 high school and 7 undergraduate students, participated in the program, representing a variety of high schools and universities throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond. Schools represented included:

• St. Ignatius High School
• Beachwood High School
• Rocky River High School
• John Hay High School
• Strongsville High School
• Lake Ridge Academy
• Olmsted Falls High School
• Beaumont School
• Case Western Reserve University
• Kent State University
• The Ohio State University
• John Carroll University
• Indiana University

As a result of the program, the students were able to build connections and relationships with clinical research professionals, expanded their understanding of the research process, and developed a better appreciation for the roles that support clinical and translational research. The experience helped participants expand their network and portfolios, explore future educational and career opportunities while strengthening awareness of the vital role clinical research plays in advancing patient care and medical innovation.

Calling All Research Support Professionals!

The CTSC Workforce Development team is collaborating with two other Ohio CTSA programs (The Ohio State University and The University of Cincinnati) to host the first ELEVATE: Advanced Clinical Research Symposium on Friday, September 18, 2026, at The Ohio State University’s Energy Advancement & Innovation Center in Columbus. This symposium is designed specifically for experienced Research Support Professionals and will bring together colleagues from all of Ohio’s three CTSA institutions to explore emerging trends, collaboration opportunities, and challenges and innovations in clinical research. The symposium is currently accepting virtual registration at this time.

Save the Date: March 19, 2027!

The CTSC will be hosting its second CTSC Research Discovery Day which invites investigators, trainees, and approximately 100 high school students to explore the services offered by the CTSC, learn about its funded research, and discover successful clinical and translational research from the CTSC and its partner institutions. Additionally, we will showcase spotlight talks and a keynote speaker to highlight innovative clinical and translational research being done locally, as well as nationally. High school student attendees will have time for networking, poster judging, and research career exploration. 

The event will feature:

• Poster sessions & prizes
• Keynote speaker
• Funding opportunities from the CTSC
• Networking opportunities
• Spotlight sessions on clinical and translational research from both local and national speakers
• Opportunities to expose the next generation of scientists to clinical research
