NEWS + ANNOUNCEMENTS + REMINDERS

2025 Women's League Scholarship Awardees

This year, our Women's League awarded scholarships to 19 students across Hawai‘i. On Sunday we had an opportunity to celebrate them at a reception and even hear from a few of them about their background and goals. We congratulate these 19 scholars on their outstanding achievements—their hard work, dedication, and perseverance! It is an honor to invest in Hawai‘i students through supporting their higher education. Thank you to the Women's League for this impactful ministry. View the full list of scholarship awardees and messages from some recipients.

Attend Interfaith Vigil in Solidarity with Migrants

Hosted by Faith Action Hawai‘i

Join people of faith and the wider community for an Interfaith Vigil in Solidarity with Migrants next Thursday, August 14, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 PM along Ala Moana Boulevard outside Waterfront Plaza (between South Street and Punchbowl Street). Let's draw courage and strength from our faiths to oppose injustice and act in love for our neighbors. Bring your grief, your sacred anger, your hopes and prayer, courage, and a candle or light if you can.

Honoring Constance Uejio's Retirement from the HSO

CUC member and staff musician Constance Uejio is retiring from the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra after an extraordinary 44 seasons as principal harpist. Her musicianship, mentoring and commitment to music in Hawai‘i has created an incredible legacy. Please join us next Sunday, August 17, at 10 AM in the Women's Building to congratulate Connie and celebrate the artistry that she has shared with so many in our Island community!

Give blood next Tuesday!

Hawai‘i needs more than 200 blood donors every day! All 18 of Hawai‘i's civilian hospitals rely on donors to provide blood for everything ranging from cancer and burn treatments to surgeries and transplants. If you are in good health, 16 or older, at least 110 pounds, you may be eligible to give blood.

Sign up now to donate blood on Tuesday, August 12, between 8 AM to 2 PM in the Women's Building. Schedule an appointment online or contact Cory Taylor: 808-440-3043, cory-taylor@centralunionchurch.org.

If you donate at our Blood Drive on August 12 (and let Cory know), you can be entered to win a $25 gift card! If you get a friend/family member to donate, they will also have a chance to win and you will get an extra entry.

Nominations for Council

Grant Itomitsu, Jocelyn Pratt, and Nathan Wong have been nominated to serve as At Large Council Members. Learn more about the nominees in July's issue of The Spire. They will be voted on by the Congregation at the Annual Meeting on September 7. Church members that wish to make additional nominations of candidates for these three positions may do so by August 13. PRAY FOR OUR CHURCH

Pray for those impacted by our church ministries. As we attempt to do outreach, let us also reflect on how we are blessed by those we aim to serve.

Give thanks for health and the ability, opportunity, and willingness to share physical parts of ourselves to help others live!

Pray for our church council as they work on our behalf. May their work be guided by faith, equity, and love for our church and community.

Readers Needed for Worship!

Worship is one of the heartbeats of our church – it is the work of the whole church community in praising God, hearing God's word to us and responding in faith. One way to help each other in our worship is by reading scripture and other parts of our service. It enhances our experience of worship when we can have different faces and voices leading worship.

If you are willing to read in a worship service, please join our pool of readers! Learn more and sign up by clicking HERE.

Beware of Email Scams!

Scams come in many forms, whether it's someone impersonating church staff or even a member, or a stranger seeming to have a good deal for you on a special product or service. Please be cautious when checking emails! Know that church staff will never ask you to purchase something or give personal information by email. Often you can identify an email's authenticity by verifying the sender’s email address (CUC staff emails end with @centralunionchurch.org), but it's also possible for scammers to mimic email addresses. So if you receive any strange message at all and are ever in doubt, just delete it, don't reply or click on any links. You may call the church office (808-941-0957) to confirm.
