NEWS + ANNOUNCEMENTS + REMINDERS

Excerpt of Pastoral Letter on Minneapolis

Pastoral Letter: Minneapolis

Following recent events in Minneapolis, Pastor Rushan shared a Pastoral Letter on January 24, the day Alex Pretti was shot and killed by federal agents. "What we are witnessing is not normal, and it should never be treated as such. It is right to feel horrified. It is right to feel overwhelmed. It is right to feel the tremble in your spirit when justice is trampled and human dignity is dismissed and voices are silenced. But my beloved church 'ohana - do not lose hope." "In moments like this, regardless of our politics, we hold fast to one another as human beings made in the image of God."

Pastoral Letter & Prayer

Our Conference Minister, David Popham, shared a prayer and pastoral letter in response to the fatal shootings by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis. "Make us instruments of your peace, Ke Akua, not by ignoring injustice, but by refusing to surrender to hatred. Grant our nation the courage to become better than we are."

Volunteers Needed

The CUC Youth's annual Punahou Carnival parking fundraiser is happening on February 6 & 7! Volunteers are needed throughout the day and evening to assist with parking. Help is also needed to pick up and drop off food for volunteers. This year, 50% of proceeds will go to maintenance of the Great Lawn, the other 50% will go to fund youth experiences and enable us to donate to community organizations.

If you're available and would like to support our youth, come help and enjoy some fresh air and fellowship while you're at it! If you have any questions about volunteering or if you are able to help on Friday or Saturday, SIGN UP or email our Youth Director at melissa-thach@centralunionchurch.org.

Release Rogerio

We continue to pray for our dear community members Cheryl and Rogerio who are feeling the weight of inhumane immigration policies. Rogerio is still being detained in Honolulu. Cheryl is working with an attorney to keep Rogerio in Hawai‘i based on her needs as a U.S. citizen with permanent disabilities and Rogerio's role as husband and caregiver. A friend has started an online petition for Rogerio to remain here in Honolulu.

Windward Cottage for Rent

The cottage at our Windward church campus has been newly renovated in anticipation of a new associate minister. In the meantime until someone is hired, we are hoping to rent out the cottage. It will likely be available for about 3-6 months. If you know of anyone needing a place for that term, check out the listing!

REFLECT & RESPOND

Questions for reflection and response following last Sunday's sermon: "Open Doors, Warm Light: Hospitality as Holy Welcome"

Questions for Reflection

  • When have you felt truly welcomed—at church, at home, or elsewhere? What made that welcome feel holy?
  • Is there a time you found yourself on the outside, longing for an open door? How did that experience shape your understanding of hospitality?
  • Who in your life might be waiting for an invitation to the table—a neighbor, a colleague, someone you’ve seen but never spoken to?
  • How does practicing hospitality deepen your faith or challenge you to grow?

Questions for Feedback

  • What does “radical hospitality” look like in our church community? Are there ways we can open our doors wider?
  • How can we make our fellowship events, worship, and ministries more accessible and inviting to newcomers and long-time members alike?
  • What stories of welcome—funny, moving, or surprising—would you like to share with the congregation?
  • In what ways can our church embody the sacrament of hospitality in the coming weeks?

Please email your responses to these questions to Pastor Rushan at rushan-sinnaduray@centralunionchurch.org.

PRAY FOR OUR CHURCH

Pray for each of us as we take in the daily news of our world. May we choose to bear witness and not turn away. May we realize what work we are called to do, individually and collectively.

Give thanks for the blessing of music, for those who share it, and those who listen. May transformative love inspire all at our Jazz Vespers service.

Pray for those feeling unheard. May we all practice strengthening our voices and also listening with greater care.

Read in the Sunday worship service!

Sundays at 7 AM / 9 AM / 11 AM

Worship is one of the heartbeats of our church – it is the work of the whole church community in praising God, hearing God's word to us and responding in faith. One way to help each other in our worship is by reading scripture and other parts of our service. It enhances our experience of worship when we can have different faces and voices leading worship. If you are willing to read in a worship service, please join our pool of readers! Learn more and sign up by clicking HERE.

Beware of Email Scams!

Scams come in many forms, whether it's someone impersonating church staff or even a member, or a stranger seeming to have a good deal for you on a special product or service. Please be cautious when checking emails! Know that church staff will never ask you to purchase something or give personal information by email. Often you can identify an email's authenticity by verifying the sender’s email address (CUC staff emails end with @centralunionchurch.org), but it's also possible for scammers to mimic email addresses. So if you receive any strange message at all and are ever in doubt, just delete it, don't reply or click on any links. You may call the church office (808-941-0957) to confirm.
