Celebrate Juneteenth
Today is Juneteenth, a federal holiday that commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that they were free. This came two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It was common for enslavers to delay sharing this information with those they held captive. Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th, and is also known as Freedom Day, Black Independence Day, and Jubilee Day.
| |
Honor Juneteenth this year with self-guided resources created/curated by the UCC's Join the Movement for Racial Justice. Read more and view resources online!
Dr. Sharon R. Fennema, curator of Join the Movement for the UCC said, “We find ourselves living in a moment where there are renewed efforts to erase parts of the history of this country, especially the lineages and stories of those who have fought for freedom from the oppressive, violent, and death-dealing forces of white supremacy and colonization. Part of the sacred calling to resistance as Christians for these days is to invest our time and energy and resources in learning and remembering these histories.”

Time to End Gun Violence
Our Sanctuary spire clock will be lit in orange for the remainder of June for Gun Violence Awareness Month. It is past time to end gun violence and this is a reminder for us to work for a future free from the harm done through these weapons.
This resolution of witness, adopted at the Hawai‘i Conference UCC ‘Aha Pae‘āina in 2022, implores our churches and members “to pray for peace and for an end to these horrific acts of violence, and to let our prayers move us to meaningful action.”

God, help us to not only recognize Juneteenth, but also to honor it by learning and remembering histories of those who have fought for freedom from oppression, so that we may continue their legacy.
We give thanks for opportunities to care for our environment and practice being good stewards of the planet. We give thanks for those who will volunteer for Saturday's Going Green Day!
We pray for those exploring church membership, that they would find a faith home.

Readers Needed for Worship!
Worship is one of the heartbeats of our church – it is the work of the whole church community in praising God, hearing God's word to us and responding in faith. One way to help each other in our worship is by reading scripture and other parts of our service. It enhances our experience of worship when we can have different faces and voices leading worship.
If you are willing to read in a worship service, please join our pool of readers! Learn more and sign up by clicking HERE.

Beware of Email Scams!
Scams come in many forms, whether it's someone impersonating church staff or even a member, or a stranger seeming to have a good deal for you on a special product or service. Please be cautious when checking emails! Know that church staff will never ask you to purchase something or give personal information by email. Often you can identify an email's authenticity by verifying the sender’s email address (CUC staff emails end with @centralunionchurch.org), but it's also possible for scammers to mimic email addresses. So if you receive any strange message at all and are ever in doubt, just delete it, don't reply or click on any links. You may call the church office (808-941-0957) to confirm.
