NEWS + ANNOUNCEMENTS + REMINDERS

Message after the Election

"I know that not all friends and members of Central Union Church vote the same way, nor should we. However, as a result, the wide diversity of emotion and feeling ranging from anxiety, fear and trauma to joy and celebration is to be expected and is understandable.

I wanted to write to you today, because I wanted to acknowledge and name the wide range of feelings and emotions that are present today in everyone we will encounter as we go about our daily lives and to share some words of faith, hope and love as we navigate the next few days and weeks."

–Pastor Rushan, November 6, 2024

Support CUPS Fall Fitness FUNdraiser

Central Union Preschool's 2024 Fall Fitness FUNdraiser will be on Friday, November 15, with the theme, "Believe You Can!" This is the one and only annual fundraiser of the PTO which organizes ALL the events for the keiki, ‘ohana, and staff. The money raised also helps to fund the school yearbook, classroom supplies, playground equipment, and Staff Appreciation Day.

Can you or your company help CUPS exceed past fundraising efforts so the PTO can organize amazing school-wide events for our children?

Faith Formation Opportunity: Starting November 19

Be Transformed this Advent Season! His parents gave him the name Jesus. But the prophets, the shepherds, the wise men, and the angels addressed him by other names. They called him Lord, Messiah, Savior, Emmanuel, Light of the World, and Word Made Flesh. In Incarnation: Rediscovering the Significance of Christmas, best-selling author and United Methodist Pastor Adam Hamilton examines the names of Christ used by the Gospel writers, exploring the historical and personal significance of his birth. This Advent season, join us for a 4-session video study to remember what’s important.

In the face of uncertainty and conflict, Christians reclaim the Christ Child who brings us together, heals our hearts, and calls us to bring light into the darkness. Now more than ever, we invite you to reflect upon the significance of the Christ Child for our lives, for our faith and for our world today!

Tuesdays 6:00 – 7:30 PM – November 19, December 3, 10, 17

Thursdays 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM – November 21, December 5, 12, 19

There will be separate classes offered in the morning and evening. You are welcome to move between sessions. In registering, you are not registering for a specific session, just indicating that you will be participating in this study.

Upcoming Learning Tree

Sunday, November 24, 2024, 10-11 AM

Room 201/202 on the 2nd floor of the Family Life Building

All are welcome to come and learn the process of empathic listening, considered to be the most helpful way to respond to others when they are experiencing distress – though counter to what is commonly understood as help. This forum, “When I Listen People Speak and Come Alive: Empathic Listening”, will be facilitated by Allan Rohlfs who has practiced listening as a psychotherapist and taught this widely for five decades, including for 30 years to all seminary students at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He has a book coming out soon with the same title.

Learning Opportunity

Monday, November 25, 6:30 – 8:00 PM in the Parish Hall

Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine has drastically escalated with U.S. support since the Hamas attack in October 2023, but the Israeli-Palestinian conflict started decades prior. Come learn how we got here in this lecture, 'Gaza in International Context,' presented by Ibrahim Aoudé and Cynthia Franklin. Educating ourselves is one way we are called to faithfully respond to the Resolution of Witness affirmed at the HCUCC ‘Aha Pae‘āina in 2024, 'A Call to Education and Action Regarding the Crisis in Gaza.'"

PRAY FOR OUR CHURCH

Pray for our congregation following the General Election, that we would make space for the many different emotions that are being felt, that we would find renewed strength to continue our work of loving God and neighbor.

Pray for the veterans in our communities and the sacrifices they had to make for the United States.

Give thanks for the many different opportunities we have to learn and grow together!

Readers Needed for Worship!

Worship is one of the heartbeats of our church – it is the work of the whole church community in praising God, hearing God's word to us and responding in faith. One way to help each other in our worship is by reading scripture and other parts of our service. It enhances our experience of worship when we can have different faces and voices leading worship.

If you are willing to read in a worship service, please join our pool of readers! Learn more and sign up by clicking HERE.

Beware of Email Scams!

Scams come in many forms, whether it's someone impersonating a church leader, or a stranger seeming to have a good deal for you on a special product or service. Please be cautious when checking emails! Know that church staff will never ask you to purchase something or give personal information. Often you can identify an email's authenticity by verifying the sender’s email address (CUC staff emails end with @centralunionchurch.org), but it's also possible for scammers to mimic email addresses. So if you receive any strange message at all and are ever in doubt, just delete it, don't reply or click on any links. You may call the church office (808-941-0957) to confirm.
