Hello Friends,

I recently attended a training event and had the opportunity to spend lots of time in conversation with United Methodist colleagues. One of the topics that came up was, "What does it mean to be Methodist?" Obviously, neither our conversation nor this article can answer the breadth of this question, but it is important to remember one of the key points of what it means to be Methodist. In one of his many letters, John Wesley wrote, "Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? Without a doubt, we may. Herein all the children of God may unite, notwithstanding these smaller differences."

Being Methodist has never been about agreeing on everything. That is not our history. I appreciate that John Wesley said, "though we cannot" (my emphasis) rather than though we may not. He seems to have understood that it is inevitable that there will be differences of opinion. It seems that the goal is not to spend so much of our time trying to convince others that we are right, but rather that we should remember what we hold in common. To read more click here:

2022 Pacific Northwest Annual Conference Report

Annual Conference is the annual gathering of United Methodist clergy and laity across our Pacific Northwest connection. The 149th session of the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference was held remotely online on June 19, 21 and 25, 2022, with clergy and laity sessions preceding it on June 1 and 14, respectively, and with commissioning and ordination occurring on June 22. Bishop Elaine JW Stanovsky of the Greater Northwest Episcopal Area was the officiating bishop. The conference theme was Called To Be: Alert, Faithful, Brave, Love, based on 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. Read more about what happened at this year's conference here.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!

During the school year, our church hosts a Head Start preschool program in partnership with the Community Early Learning Center at North Idaho College. In addition to providing space for the preschool, we also raise funds for Weekend Food Packs and purchase school supplies for the older siblings in our Head Start families.

This year the church is sending $3145.00 we have already raised to the Food Pack initiative, which provides essential supplemental nutrition for food-insecure children in Head Start. But we still need help raising funds for school supplies! It costs approximately $40 per student to purchase a year’s worth of school supplies. Please consider donating to this ministry by writing a check to the church and putting “Head Start School Supplies” in the memo line, or by giving online at cdaumc.org/give and choosing “Head Start School Supplies Drive” from the dropdown menu. If you are unable to give money at this time, there will also be an opportunity to donate your time this fall by reading books to the preschoolers (more information to come). Thank you for your support!

Phishing Scams

Recently the church was victim to a type of online fraud called 'phishing.' Phishing is when a scammer impersonates a member or employee of a legitimate organization through email in order to steal money or implant malware on a device. Thankfully, the amount stolen from the church was very small and steps have been taken to secure our bank account. This is a good time for all of us to review safe email practices!

Read this article in the link below to learn more about how to identify and protect yourself from phishing scams. As a reminder, church staff will never email you asking for money or gift cards. If in doubt, always call the church office to verify a Phishing Scam.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has a new direct phone number! Anyone who is experiencing a mental health crisis or suicidal thoughts can dial 988 and be immediately connected with a crisis counselor. The previous number (1-800-273-8255) also still works. Please program 988 into your cell phone so you can be prepared to help someone in their time of need.
