The CUNY CREST Institute is pleased to release the January-February issue of its bi-monthly bulletin that highlights CREST’s activities within those months. These include participation in the American Meteorological Society’s 104th Annual Meeting held in Baltimore, MD; attending the “Acknowledging the Effects of Climate Change- Let’s Take Action Now” workshop held in Puerto Rico and the “Becoming Everything You Are” (BEYA) Science Technology Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Conference in Baltimore, MD. Additionally, CREST hosted two seminars at CCNY. The first seminar provided insights into the National Science Foundation’s Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers Program (IUCRC) and how CUNY can participate in the same while the second seminar helped audience explore entrepreneurship as a path to put their science into practice and hear success stories from CREST’s alumni. CREST celebrates the achievement of its members- Dr. Neal Phillip, and Ms. Paramita Sen, who installed six new weather stations in two phases during January and February 2024 in the states of Orissa (3) and Telangana (3) in India, as part of their public diplomacy project. Further, new scientists and faculty have been joining the institute as affiliate members. We will be introducing them- their background and research interests. In this edition, CREST welcomes Kimberly Huppert as a faculty member. CREST brings to you several exciting opportunities including upcoming events & fellowships. | |

CREST participated in a two-day workshop titled Acknowledging the Effects of Climate Change- Let’s Take Action Now organized by the Bureau for Emergency Management and Disaster Administration and Caribbean Climate Adaptation Adaption Network (CCAN)- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Adaptation Partnerships (CAP) Team. This workshop was held in the University of Puerto Rico Campus on January 25 and January 26, 2024. CREST participated in the American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) 104th Annual Meeting held in Baltimore, Maryland from January 28 to February 1, 2024. CREST leadership including Dr. Reza Khanbilvardi, CREST Executive Director, Dr. Shakila Merchant, CUNY CREST HIRES Director and; staff including Mr. César Ortiz, CREST Office Manager and Dr. Liubov Kreminska, Administrative Director of the Earth System and Environmental Engineering (ESE) Degree Program at CCNY; students and affiliates participated in the event. As the co-chair of the 33rd Education Conference, Dr. Shakila Merchant helped convene 18 sessions, 3 joint sessions and one presidential session. Other CREST faculty and pillar members who attended included Drs. Reginald Blake and Hamidreza Nourouzi. | |

CUNY CREST HIRES Director, Dr. Shakila Merchant delivered a talk on ‘CUNY Summer Programs’ Highlights and Methods of Communication' on February 16, 2024 as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) GEO REU Network conferencing meet. This small meeting discussed aspects of running a research internship for undergraduate students in the geosciences. During the meeting, Dr. Merchant provided highlights of the 2023 CUNY summer programs such as CUNY CREST HIRES and the CUNY CREST Summer Bridge. She talked about the key program elements, peer-based vertical mentorship model, and program schedules. | |

Co-Director of the International Collaborations Pillar and Associate Director of the Education & Training Pillar, CUNY CREST, Dr. Neal Phillip and Associate Co-Director of International Collaboration Pillar, CUNY CREST, Paramita Sen contributed to installing six solar powered weather stations in two states of India as part of Phase II of a US state department public diplomacy grant project. They also serve as the principal investigators on this grant. Six weather stations were installed in two phases during January and February 2024 in the states of Orissa (3) and Telangana (3). Previously, six stations were installed in Phase I in September 2022 in Orissa (2), Telangana (3) and Andhra Pradesh. | |
CREST Participates in the 2024 BEYA STEM Conference | |
CREST participated in the Becoming Everything You Are (BEYA) Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland from February 16 to 17, 2024. Mr. César Ortiz, CREST Office Manager and Dr. Liubov Kreminska, Administrative Director of the Earth System and Environmental Engineering (ESE) Degree Program at CCNY represented the institute at the event. As recruiters, Mr. Ortiz and Dr. Kreminska interacted with over seventy-five (75) students who approached the CREST booth to learn about the vast opportunities available within the City College, ESE, and NOAA Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies II (CESSRST II). | |

CREST Hosts Two Seminars: NSF IUCRC & Entrepreneurship | |

CREST hosted two seminars on February 29, 2024 at the Grove School of Engineering as part of its Entrepreneurship and Business Development pillar activities. The first seminar was on National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRC) and the second seminar was on Entrepreneurship.

CREST Welcomes Kimberly Huppert

Ms. Huppert virtually visiting a classroom of 3rd – 5th graders in Montgomery, Texas through the Skype-a-Scientist program to discuss her research and career path and opportunities in the geosciences. | |
Kimberly Huppert joins the CREST institute as its faculty member. Ms. Huppert is an Assistant Professor in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences department at the City College of the City University of New York. She teaches Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geomorphology. Ms. Huppert joined CCNY in Fall 2022. Ms. Huppert studies how the Earth's surface changes over time and how it is shaped by erosion, tectonics, and climate. She is deeply engaged in her role as a professor and is passionate about increasing accessibility to science education and frequently performs pre-collegiate and public outreach activities. | |

NYC Future Energy Conference |
The inaugural NYC Future Energy Conference, hosted by CCNY, will take place on March 28th, 2024 at the Shepard Hall. This one-day conference is organized around the framing question:“In the face of a changing climate, how does a city meet the twin challenges of obtaining energy sustainably and distributing that energy efficiently to its citizens.” It'll bring together diverse researchers studying the sustainable generation and storage of energy, flexible infrastructure for the efficient distribution of energy, & means for securing energy justice in the face of climate change. | |
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) CoastWatch, within the Center for Satellite Application and Research (STAR), is seeking interested students to join its team for the Princeton Open Hackathon organized by NVIDIA, OpenACC, and Princeton University.
The event will start June 4 and conclude June 14, 2024.

This two-year fellowship brings a graduate student to conduct research at the Reserve to address a key coastal management question. These questions help Hudson River communities understand coastal challenges and impacts to influence future policy and management strategies. Research being conducted at the Reserve is intended to be a substantial part of the fellow’s degree research. At least 6 weeks must be spent at the Reserve each year.

The Reducetarian
Fellowship

The Reducetarian Fellowship is a one-year experience designed to equip and encourage students to pursue a career focused on combating industrial animal agriculture. Each fellow receives a $7,500 stipend to support their participation in the program, and one-on-one mentorship from Fellowship staff throughout the year.

CESSRST II Fellowship
| National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies (NOAA CESSRST) II is one of the four Cooperative Science Centers. The program is funded by the NOAA Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving institutions (EPP/MSI). It provides the education and training for graduates to form a pathway to workforce opportunities within NOAA and the NOAA mission enterprise. | |
UCAR’s Next Generation Graduate Fellowship |
The Next Generation Fellowship is a 2 year program for students currently enrolled in graduate studies related to Earth System Sciences at a North American university. This program provides the opportunity for fellows to explore the interplay between scientific research, diversity and inclusion, and public policy within the field of Earth Systems Science.

About the CUNY CREST Institute
The CUNY CREST institute was officially approved in June 2010 and inaugurated on November 29, 2010. It is a collation of interdisciplinary researchers across CUNY system who are passionate about addressing grand societal challenges through advanced Earth System Sensing technologies, raising awareness, engaging secondary & postsecondary students & community outreach. The institute is designed to provide a collaborative environment for faculty and scientists from various CUNY campuses to engage in the field of Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing.
