The CUNY CREST Institute is pleased to release the November-December issue of its bi-monthly bulletin that highlights CREST’s participation in the CUNY Climate Consortium Townhall and Expo held at the CUNY Graduate Center and the Youth Engagement in International Climate Negotiations workshop held at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Additionally, CREST hosted delegates from NOAA NSSL to discuss potential collaboration. It also hosted a seminar titled ‘Everything the Atmosphere Touches: Student Opportunities at NSF NCAR/UCAR/UCP’. The institute celebrates the achievements of its members such as Drs. Friedman, Bhaskaran, Phillip, and Ms. Paramita Sen. Further, under the leadership of Dr. Shakila Merchant, CREST successfully completed the 2023 Bridge to College Program (B2C) on December 8th. As we reflect on the 2023 journey, we are truly filled with gratitude for several achievements resulting from collaborative efforts between CUNY CREST scientists and faculty members and our external stakeholders, partners, and collaborators. We thank our friends who joined the CREST holiday party to celebrate our accomplishments, partnership, friendship, and teamwork before we said goodbye to 2023. CREST wishes you and your loved ones a happy new year!

CREST Hosts NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory

at the City College of New York

CREST hosted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) from Nov. 7 to Nov. 9, 2023 at the Grove School of Engineering, City College of New York. The purpose of the event was to help CUNY CREST and NOAA NSSL understand each other's needs and brainstorm collaborative research ideas/potential partnerships to address the same.

CREST Participates in the CUNY Climate Consortium

Town Hall and Expo 

CREST participated in the inaugural 2023 City University of New York (CUNY) Climate Consortium (C3) TownHall and Expo held on November 13, 2023 at the CUNY Graduate Center, New York. CREST leadership including Dr. Shakila Merchant, staff, affiliates, and students attended the event. It aimed to bring together the CUNY community to discuss ways to address climate change and resilience as well as share helpful resources to lead the initiative. CREST has been an active member of the consortium since the inception of its planning in Summer 2023.

Dr. Shakila Merchant Invited to Participate in the Youth Engagement in International Negotiations Workshop at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice


Dr. Shakila Merchant was invited to attend the Youth Engagement in International Climate Negotiations workshop held at and organized by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York, on December 4, 2023. For the society to address the climate crisis and ensure climate justice, John Jay College aims to help youth voices, particularly from impacted communities, be heard. To forward the mission, the college is helping prepare its students for participation in the 2024 Conference of Youth (COY) and Conference of Parties (COP) international climate discussion at the United Nations. To this end, the workshop was an introductory and planning meeting.

CREST Hosts a Seminar on Student Opportunities at National Science Foundation in Partnership with

the NSF NCAR/UCAR 

CREST hosted a virtual seminar titled ‘Everything the Atmosphere Touches: Student Opportunities at National Science Foundation/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)/University Corporation for Atmospheric Research/University Cooperative Centers (NSF NCAR/UCAR/UCP)’ on December 8, 2023. CREST/CCNY students, affiliates, faculty, and management participated in the seminar to gain insights into the research that NSF/NCAR/UCAR conducts as well as learn about the 2024 paid student opportunities that are available at these agencies in Boulder, Colorado.

Dr. Shakila Merchant Invited to Serve as a Member of the New York Harbor School Professional Advisory Committee 

Dr. Shakila Merchant, Director, CUNY CREST High School Initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Engineering and Sciences (HIRES) was invited to serve as a member of the New York Harbor School Professional Advisory Committee (PAC). As part of the Committee, Dr. Merchant attended the New York Harbor School PAC Annual Meeting held on December 8, 2023 at the Governors Island, New York.

CREST Celebrates the Achievements of its Members

CUNY CREST Research Scientist, Dr. Erin Friedman publishes two research articles in the Science Direct that contribute to the broader field of climate Justice by unpacking dominant discourses and political economic patterns that are shaping climate decision-making. Read more here.


Dr. Friedman received the 2023 Adaptation Futures fellowship for the September 6, 2023- October 6, 2023 period. She received the Connectivity Award on September 6, 2023. Read more here.


Dr. Friedman was appointed as the Vice Chair of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Caribbean Geography Speciality Group (CGSG) on November 1, 2023. Read more here.

Dr. Neal Phillip & Paramita Sen Contribute towards Bronx Community College Receiving $1 Million Green Action Sustainability Grant 

Co-Director of the International Collaborations Pillar and Associate Director of the Education & Training Pillar, CUNY CREST, Dr. Neal Phillip and Associate Co-Director of international Collaboration Pillar, CUNY CREST, Paramita Sen contribute towards the Bronx Community College (BCC) receiving a $1 million Green Action Sustainability Grant. BCC was selected as the winner of the inaugural Bronx Green Action Challenge sponsored by the Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC). As a result of the same, BCC will receive a $1 million award funded by the New York Power Authority to work on the college’s sustainability.

Professor and Founding Director of BCC Geospatial Center of the CUNY CREST Institute and Doctoral Faculty in the Earth and Environmental Science Program at Graduate Center & Bronx Community College (BCC), City University of New York (CUNY), Dr. Sunil Bhaskaran publishes research article titled, 'Deriving Community Vulnerability Indices by Analyzing Multi-Resolution Space-Borne Data and Demographic Data for Extreme Weather Events in Global Cities’ in the Science Direct. 

CREST Successfully Completes the 2023 Bridge to College Program

CREST, under the leadership of Dr. Shakila Merchant successfully completed the 2023 Bridge to College (B2C) on December 8, 2023. The B2C initiative began in 2015-2016 to engage, inspire, and motivate a cohort of middle school (8th graders) students from the City College Academy of the Arts - an Early College School, in NOAA mission driven Science Technology Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) focused hands-on activities. This year, B2C kicked off on October 20, 2023 and eight students along with their teacher(s) participated in this 7-week long seminar style learning that focuses on ‘Earth Observation and Surveillance.’

CREST hosted the Earth System and Environmental Engineering (ESE) Program Mixer on November 2, 2023 at the Grove School of Engineering, City College of New York. Current and prospective ESE students, faculty, and management attended the mixer. The event helped attendees learn about the ESE program at CCNY, network and mingle!

CREST in collaboration with the CESSRST II Center and the ESE Program at CCNY hosted a holiday party to celebrate its accomplishments, partnerships, friendships, and teamwork before saying goodbye to 2023. Students, faculty, administration from the CCNY and other partner institutions attended!

About the CUNY CREST Institute


The CUNY CREST institute was officially approved in June 2010 and inaugurated on November 29, 2010. It is a collation of interdisciplinary researchers across CUNY system who are passionate about addressing grand societal challenges through advanced Earth System Sensing technologies, raising awareness, engaging secondary & postsecondary students & community outreach. The institute is designed to provide a collaborative environment for faculty and scientists from various CUNY campuses to engage in the field of Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing.
