Dr. Reza Khanbilvardi

The CUNY CREST Institute is excited to share its summer highlights in this issue of the bulletin. CREST successfully concluded its summer programs; Summer Bridge, NSF REU & IUSE, and HIRES. Our amazing 2024 summer interns showcased their research at the 2nd Annual Celebrating Research Excellence Symposium at City Tech, CUNY on August 8, 2024, attended by over 200 attendees, and at the New York City Science Research Mentoring Consortium (NYSRM) Consortium’s Student Research Symposium at AmNH, NY, on August 15, 2024, with over 1400 attendees from both STEM and non-STEM communities. Additionally, the institute hosted its second presenter, Dr. Arpita Mondal under its Deliver, Dialogue, Discuss, and Discourse (D4) Series. Dr. Mondal's presentation focused on deciphering the role of human-induced climate change in flooding in India and its impact. To continue our efforts in strengthening international collaborations and mitigating risks and minimizing disaster-related losses, CREST and India’s International Institute for Security and Safety Management (IISSM) signed an official MoU to establish research and educational collaboration and cultural exchange. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Vartika Chandra Saman as our newest Research Scientist. CREST celebrates its faculty members Drs. Te Pei and Yingli Tian who received an NSF award to conduct research to enhance landslide awareness and preparedness for communities. Additionally, CREST’s Community Outreach and Stakeholder Engagement Pillar’s Co-Associate Director, Dr. Reginald Blake has earned the prestigious Charles E. Anderson Award by the American Meteorological Society that will be presented to him during their 105th Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana in January 2025. Further, CREST participated in several events including the Consulate General of India, NY’s send off ceremony for the third cohort of the CUNY-India study abroad program, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society’s 44th annual International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium held in Greece, and 31st International Laser Radar Conference & 22nd Coherent Laser Radar Conference in Germany. As we wrap-up a summer filled with learning, engagement and opportunities, I am thankful to the CREST community for their dedication and hard-work.

CUNY CREST HIRES & Summer Bridge Director's Note

Dr. Shakila Merchant

In its 10th year, CUNY CREST HIRES and Summer Outreach was successfully launched on June 27, 2024 and ended on August 15, 2024. The mission of the CREST outreach has always been since the inception, to build robust and inclusive pathways for secondary and post secondary students traditionally underserved in the STEM field. With a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, the program brings science, social science, technology, research and professional development through structured and holistic training opportunities. Each year, students learn, engage and end the program with a strong sense of belonging, and create their own STEM identity that helps them bridge through their next phase of professional careers - be it applying to college, transferring to senior colleges or preparing for graduate school or workforce.

What Was New?

This year, the HIRES program launched a new course as part of its curriculum; Environmental Engineering: Principles, Data, and Analysis (ENGR 30200), partnered with the Columbia Climate School to host a two-day workshop on emerging risks from concurrent, compounding and record-breaking extreme heat across sectors, and increased the recruitment through additional funding that was awarded by the American Nuclear Society for the research project titled Asset-Based Collaboration for Effective Engagement of Nuclear Wastes in Consent-Based Siting.
