New Year- New You!

Dedicated Single Mom Rises to Nursing Supervisor

Kelsey Conway is a former tenant of Acacia Network’s Anderson Avenue housing site in the Bronx. She has been a great example of what the HRA Pathways program considers to be a model student. Kelsey does not let her past and challenges roadblock her path to success.

Kelsey has a son with special needs. As a single parent, Kelsey found it hard to provide the attention Mason required, while balancing school and other responsibilities. Having a child with such a disability requires special resources. Kelsey relied heavily on in-home nurses to care for Mason while she was in school.

Kelsey also found herself taking out loans to pay for school and wondered about her financial future. She expressed these difficulties to the director at her housing site and CUNY staff.

CUNY assisted Kelsey with her paying for her tuition going forward. The HRA Pathways program also helped Kelsey with books, school supplies, and MetroCards, to support her in her academic and career goals.

With CUNY’s help, Kelsey was able to continue in  nursing school at Monroe College without taking on any further debt. She obtained her associate’s degree, and then a bachelor’s degree in pediatric nursing! She obtained employment, was promoted from RN (Registered Nurse) to RN Supervisor. She was able to move into her own apartment with her son.

She’s not done yet. Kelsey was accepted into a Doctorate of Nursing program, and she plans to pursue more training in her field

It’s a new year and the possibilities are endless.
