HRA Pathways Program News & Updates

October 2023 | Issue 16

Resident Spotlight: This week we spotlighting a program alumni and former Hollis Avenue resident Dr. Abdus Salaam Musa. Read his testimony and words of wisdom.

I, Dr. Abdus Salaam Musa, found that my experience of moving into Veterans housing has been a blessing and a challenge. I wondered about the opportunity when I moved into the complex. I was grieving over my mother's death, and leaving the home we shared into what was called a one-bedroom was not easy. I discovered a CUNY organization affiliated with Hollis Gardens related to the VA housing residents. Two gentlemen, Ralph and Jordan, invited me for an interview. They explained to me the educational and vocational opportunities offered to the veterans who resided in the complex. I explained that I was in school working on my master’s in Pastoral Counseling and a Doctorate in Ministry based on Islamic theology. They wanted to know where my school was located. I shared that the school was in Indiana and was conducting online courses.

The CUNY program had never paid for a student's coursework outside the CUNY community. After examining the school I had enrolled in, they approved my program and recommended full payment for my Doctorate. I was elated because I did not know where the money would come from to pay to further my education. Completing my degree has been life-altering. Since getting my degree, I have had the opportunity to work for an Islamic organization in the Bronx as a project manager and to learn the inner workings of running this type of non-profit organization. My status as Doctor Musa has enhanced my profile and raised the value of my civic participation in many areas, including Islamic leadership and my engagement with political leadership in the borough of Queens and other boroughs of New York City.

I am on the Clergy Advisory Board of the Queens Borough President (QBP) and the Queens District Attorney's offices. I have also received a Proclamation from the QBP for the work I have done in the community. The title and the work I have been performing have raised the recognition of my efforts on behalf of the community. These accolades are the direct result of CUNY funding my education. Much of the work I have been doing over the past 30 years directly reflects the work that I currently do in this capacity. However, since obtaining my degree, I have received more calls to join boards and to appear as a speaker on numerous panels. My opinion as a thought leader is solicited about many social issues plaguing our communities.

The CUNY program allowed me to offer the residents of the Highbridge neighborhood training in Clinical Pastoral Educational Training. Initially, I had a small number of people enrolled in the program. Despite its modicum of success, it allowed me to be compensated while enhancing my teaching and leadership skills. I was able to directly work with an individual and assist them in ministering to individuals in their Christian faith.

I highly recommend that veterans or anyone eligible participate in CUNY's programs. I encourage them to seize the opportunity to take advantage of CUNY's programs to upgrade their status in life through education or vocational training. Please explore what veteran programs CUNY offers. For those who have served our country, these programs represent a significant opportunity to provide a successful outcome in our quest to live the American dream. What CUNY offers veterans is invaluable.
