AI: Automatic Innovation

I realize that’s not what AI stands for, but it could. I was watching a client/friend’s presentation at DLD (Digital-Life-Design) in Munich this past year. He shared a presentation about AI, or so I originally thought. The message was really about using all our resources to be more productive and effective, with AI being the example he used to illustrate his point. However, in today’s workplace, my initial thought was, “How can you NOT use AI?”

Well, it turns out that it is a lot easier to forget to use AI, especially for creative endeavors, than we might think. I’m not talking about creating pictures or videos or other uses that may steal currently copywritten content or infringe on artists’ livelihood or legal rights. As a matter of fact, Bill Gross, the gentleman I referenced at the beginning of this “Cup,” started ProRata to protect those types of rights and provide attribution and compensation for creators. I’m talking about the creativity needed to help solve everyday problems and/or complex workplace issues. Bill points out with his own personal example how easy it is to overlook the value that AI can provide, especially helping us think about creative ideas and solutions to everyday situations. Bill’s lesson learned:

“The biggest losses don’t come from bad technology; they come from keeping old habits long after new tools arrive.”

Here are just some of the prompts Bill shares to initiate that creative approach coming up with new ideas, perspectives and solutions. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND watching his presentation and even emailing him afterwards for a copy, per his suggestion.

  • “Help me think this through without telling me what to do.”
  • “Give me 3 unconventional solutions to this problem.”
  • “Ask me 5 clarifying questions before answering.”
  • “Give Gemini, Claude and ChatGPT (or your favorite AI) the same task and have them argue it out.”
  • “What would I do if I had 50 people working on this?”
