CURES duty-to-consult takes effect October 2, 2018

Effective October 2, 2018, physicians must consult California’s prescription drug monitoring database (the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System, or CURES) – prior to prescribing Schedule II, III or IV controlled substances. All individuals practicing in California who possess both a state regulatory board license authorized to prescribe, dispense, furnish or order controlled substances and a Drug Enforcement Administration Controlled Substance Registration Certificate must be registered to use CURES. Physician calls on legislators to oppose bill threatening dialysis patients
As a physician, I believe I have a moral and ethical obligation to voice concern when I become aware of proposed legislation that may endanger patient health. As the founder, president, and CEO of the Minority Health Institute, a nonprofit organization which serves the public interest, I also believe it is my duty to raise alarm when I find legislation that will definitely have a negative effect on the health of minority patients who already suffer daily from a lack of access to health care.
