CVJHP Update on #GivingTuesday 2024

Hello friends of CVJHP!

On this #GivingTuesday after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, we are delighted to provide an autumn report. In September, CV Minister of Tourism, Carlos Santos, invited me to make a presentation on how Cabo Verde can promote Jewish Heritage Tourism at the 2nd Annual Conference on Sustainable Tourism in São Nicolau. I underscored these vital pre-requisites: Regular Maintenance, Signage (including hours of operation & visiting rules) and Tour Guide Training. On behalf of CVJHP, I also donated copies of our book, Os Judeus Marroquinos de Cabo Verde: Seculo XIX to the two secondary schools in São Nicolau, and had the pleasure of visiting education officials in Tarrafal. In the capital, Praia, I made a presentation before more than 100 students and history teachers at Domingos Ramos High School, and had the honor of offering dozens more books to Mr. Adriano Moreno, Nat'l. Dir. of Education, to distribute to remaining secondary schools in Santiago. My trip coincided with the start of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, which we celebrated in Praia (replete w/apples & honey) with descendents, many of whom will be the nucleus of a local branch of CVJHP. Finally, CVJHP representative Simão Levy and I met with the Min. of Culture (photo below).

Carol Castiel & Simão Levy meet w/Min. of Culture, Augusto Veiga, & Dir. of the Institute of Cultural Patrimony (IPC), Ana Samira Silva, about the need for better coordination in maintaining the Jewish cemeteries, classified as National, Historic, Cultural Patrimony, whose restoration CVJHP financed with funding from H.M. King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

Parabens to the newly-elected mayor of Ribeira Grande and re-elected mayors of Praia & Boavista where Jewish cemeteries are prominent. CVJHP volunteers are drafting texts for commemorative plaques for the Boavista Jewish cemetery, which we hope to unveil in 2025. The translation into English of our book on the Moroccan Jews of Cabo Verde is slated to materialize next year as is the creation of our CVJHP local branch.

Above is the Jewish section in the São Nicolau cemetery, which I visited on the margins of the Sustainable Tourism Conference in September. In 2025, CVJHP plans to collaborate with City Hall and the Ministry of Culture on dignified signage.
